Dubai SME, the agency of Dubai Economy mandated to develop the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector, has signed an agreement with DHL, a global express transport company, to launch the “Global Expansion Initiative for Small and Medium Enterprises” program.
As per the new initiative, DHL will offer discounted freight charges and also provide access to workshops and training programs on international expansion to Dubai SME members and companies rated under the SME RATE Framework.
Dubai SME launched the SME RATE Framework, a first-of-its-kind initiative in the region to comprehensively rate SME performance. This is instrumental in achieving the goals of the UAE Vision 2021, which include building a diversified and sustainable economy, and aligns with the Dubai Plan 2021 goal of increasing the share of SMEs in the emirate’s GDP.
The agreement was signed by Abdul Baset Al-Janahi, CEO of Dubai SME, and Jeff Walsh, general manager of DHL in the UAE, in the presence of senior executives of both entities.
“The partnership marks a significant step for SMEs particularly in enhancing productivity and promoting innovation among local companies. It will promote the performance and growth of SMEs in Dubai and across the UAE by facilitating logistics, and eliminating obstacles to exporting to markets overseas,” said Al-Janahi.
“The logistics sector plays a lead role in driving sustainable growth in Dubai and the UAE. Through our partnership with DHL, Dubai SME aims to promote best practices among SMEs and empower them for competing with large enterprises in overseas markets,” he added.
Al-Janahi said the partnership will lead to enhanced productivity and promote the export capabilities of local companies across varied sectors such as retail, and food and beverage.
Walsh said: “We look forward to this new partnership with Dubai SME and to help developing businesses in the UAE grow regionally and globally. In a project for a regional beauty brand, we used AI to generate visuals aligned with local beauty standards and cultural symbolism. The combination of AI and cultural understanding resulted in content that deeply resonated with audiences. Similarly, Anghami, MENA’s leading music streaming platform, uses AI to deliver personalized audio ads tailored to listener preferences, improving ad recall and brand affinity.
Building trust in advertising
As AI becomes integral to advertising, ethical considerations such as transparency and cultural sensitivity are paramount. In my work with a financial services provider, consumer resistance to AI-powered decision-making around data privacy required a proactive approach. By adopting IBM Watson OpenScale for transparency in AI models, we bridged the trust gap effectively.
Another notable example is TikTok’s use of AI-powered moderation tools that filter content in alignment with regional cultural norms. By combining AI with human oversight, TikTok ensures transparency while adhering to local regulations, fostering trust among users.
