ISLAMABAD: The killing of Mullah Fazalullah, chief of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), in a US drone strike in the Afghan province of Kunar is a significant development in the fight against terrorism, Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk said on Friday.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called Mulk on Friday to confirm the death of Fazalullah, “who posed a threat to Pakistan’s security,” the prime minister’s office said.
“Finally action has been taken against an enemy of the people and state of Pakistan,” Mulk said.
Fazallulah “continued to coordinate terrorist actions against Pakistan while using Afghan territory,” Mulk added.
“He was also responsible for the Army Public School attack in Peshawar in which many young innocent lives were lost.”
Ghani’s confirmation of Fazalullah’s killing underscores the importance of dealing with terrorists that threaten the security of both countries, Mulk said.
Ghani also informed the prime minister “about positive developments following the recent cease-fire announcement, which would help pave the way for the Afghan peace process to consolidate,” Mulk’s office said.
He assured Ghani of Pakistan’s support to facilitate Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace efforts.
“The two leaders exchanged Eid greetings and best wishes for the people of the two countries,” Mulk’s office said.
Earlier on Friday, Ghani called Pakistani Army chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa and shared the news of Fazalullah’s killing.
