ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan government has booked Khadim Hussain Rizvi, leader of the ultra-rigght Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), and other top leaders of the party for treason and terrorism charges, the information minister said on Saturday.
“The government has decided to take legal action against the leaders of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan," Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry told reporters in Islamabad. "Therefore Khadim Hussain Rizvi, the leader of the TLP, has been charged under terrorism and treason laws."
Rizvi was detained on November 24 after police clamped-down on hundreds of his supporters in Punjab and the city of Karachi ahead of planned protests.
After Pakistan’s Supreme Court acquitted a poor Christian women Aasia Bibi in a high profile blasphemy case last month, TLP workers – under Khadim Rizvi’s leadership – led countrywide protests and paralyzed major cities.
“All political and religious parties were taken into confidence over the cases filed against the TLP leadership,” assured the minister. “The state cannot tolerate or stay silent at protests that exceed the boundaries permitted by law.”
“In Punjab 2899 people, 149 people in Sindh, 126 people in Sindh have been taken into police custody. Amongst those arrested are Pir Afzal Hussain Qadri, Khadim Hussain Rizvi, Pir Inayatul Haq Shah and Hafiz Farooqul Hassan,” said the minister.
Chaudhry said while citizens had the right to protest, it was imperative to remain within the limits of the Constitution of Pakistan.
“Vehicles were stopped and set on fire, while fruit vendors were looted during the protests which resulted in losses worth tens of millions of rupees,” said the minister.
Chaudhry said those who harmed the lives and livelihood of the public would be dealt with an iron fist, and that cases would also be filed against those protesters who disrespected women or were involved in arson and damaged public property.
