ISLAMABAD: United Nation General Assembly (UNGA) President Maria Fernanda Espinosa will travel to Pakistan next week in her first official visit to this region since taking office in September 2018, her spokeswoman said in a statement.
“The President of the General Assembly will travel to Pakistan from the 18 to 22 January at the invitation of the Government of Pakistan. This will be the first official visit to the Asia-Pacific region by the President of the UN General Assembly since Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa took office,” the spokesperson said.
The United Nation’s Information Centre said in statement on Friday that Espinosa was “Looking forward to strengthening the ties between Pakistan and the UN, promoting multilateralism and continuing my work with Pakistan on the priorities for the 73rd Session of the GA (General Assembly)”.
While in Pakistan, Espinosa will meet with Prime Minister Imran Khan, President Arif Alvi, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, as well as representatives of the UN, civil society and women’s organisations.
Pakistan’s Ambassador at the UN in New York, Maleeha Lodhi, said in a twitter post on Saturday that she had met with Fernanda Espinosa to finalise the details of her visit next week to Pakistan.
“It will be the 1st visit by any PGA (President General Assembly) to Pakistan in 8 years. Also Ms Espinosa’s 1st visit to any country in Asia since her assumption of office,” Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi said in her twitter post.
