ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday accused the top leaders of India and Israel of ‘moral bankruptcy,’ saying they had ambitions of illegally occupying the West Bank and Kashmir to drum up support before crucial elections in both countries this month.
Israelis began voting in an election on Tuesday that could hand conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a record fifth term. India will hold a general election starting April 11 in the world’s largest democratic exercise, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a second straight term.
“When ldrs [leaders] in Israel & India show a moral bankruptcy in their readiness to annex occupied West Bank & IOK [Indian Occupied Kashmir] in defiance of int [international] law, UNSC [United Nations Security Council] resolutions & their own Constitution for votes, don't their ppl [people] feel a sense of outrage,” Khan sasked in a Twitter post.
He went on to ask why the people of the two countries did not question how far their leaders would go just to gain votes.
In February, Pakistan and India almost went to war after India carried out airstrikes inside Pakistan in retaliation to a February 14 suicide bombing in Indian-administered Kashmir that New Delhi blames on Pakistan. Islamabad denies any state complicity and responded to Indian's assault with its own air strikes. Both also engaged in brief dogfights over the skies of Kashmir. Tension cooled when Pakistan returned a downed Indian pilot.
Last week, PM Khan blamed India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for “whipping up war hysteria” over claims that India shot down a Pakistani F-16 during the standoff in February. The comments came after U.S.-based Foreign Policy magazine said all of Pakistan’s F-16 combat jets had been accounted for.
The success of Indian air strikes on a camp of the Jaish-e-Mohammed militant group in northwestern Pakistan was also thrown into doubt after satellite images showed little sign of damage.
“The truth always prevails and is always the best policy,” Khan said in a Tweet. “BJP’s attempt to win elections through whipping up war hysteria and false claims of downing a Pak F 16 has backfired with US Defense officials also confirming that no F16 was missing from Pakistan’s fleet.”
Pakistan does not have diplomatic ties with Israel and has been a staunch supporter of demands for a Palestinian state. Last month, Pakistan rejected US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights and said the move was “unfortunate.”
Israel captured the Golan in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in 1981 in a move the UN Security Council has declared as unlawful.
