ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has scheduled an impromptu media briefing on Wednesday as United Nation Security Council (UNSC) 1267 sanctions sub-committee prepares to decide listing Jaish-e-Mohammad (JEM) chief Masood Azhar as a “global terrorist.”
Credible sources confirmed to Arab News that the press briefing will focus on Pakistan based militant group leader Maulana Masood Azhar.
New Delhi has been pushing the UNSC to designate Azhar accused of several attacks on Indian soil including orchestrating the deadly February 14 Pulwama bombing in Indian administered Kashmir that killed over 40 Indian Central Reserve Police Force personnel and brought both nuclear armed neighbors at the brink of war.
India sent a dossier in March to Pakistan, but the compiled documents did not “claim any linkage of Maulana Masood Azhar (or Pakistan) with the Pulwama incident,” the Foreign Office spokesman Dr. Mohammad Faisal said earlier.
The foreign office in a message to journalists on Tuesday evening said “the spokesperson will address a media briefing… on a highly important issue” without providing further details. However a copy of latest remarks by China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang’s on Beijing’s position on the alleged militant mastermind shortly followed signaling at what to expect.
“We support the listing issue being settled within the 1267 committee through dialogue and consultation,” said Shaung in a media briefing on Tuesday. He added that “relevant consultations are going on within the committee and has achieved some progress.”
China is a permanent member of the UNSC and wields power to veto any “substantive” resolution. It has blocked India’s request moved by France, UK and the US on February 27 to impose a ban on the JeM leader under the Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the Council, staunchly opposing 14 other members voting to blacklist Azhar.
In response to questions if China is likely to lift the technical hold placed on the resolution seeking to proscribe Masood Azhar, Shuang said, “As to the designation issue, my response remains the same. China has all along maintained communication and coordination with all parties concerned. We believe that with the concerted efforts of all relevant parties, this issue can be properly resolved at the 1267 Committee.”
Pakistan has maintained that “any decision on Mr. Masood Azhar will be taken in the national interest” and not under external pressure.
