ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court on Wednesday ordered release on bail of former president and key opposition leader Asif Ali Zardari, allowing him to seek medical treatment for his multiple ailments.
Zardari, who has been under investigation on charges of corruption and money-laundering, filed an appeal to the court earlier this month to seek bail on medical grounds.
The former president is suffering from type 2 diabetes and heart disease, according to a medical board’s report that was presented in the court. “The former president cannot receive proper medical treatment in jail,” the report said.
The National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) legal team informed the court that it had completed its interrogation in two corruption and money-laundering cases against Zardari and filed a reference too. The court then granted the bail.
Zardari, the widower of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, who was killed in 2007, served as Pakistan’s president from 2008 to 2013. The co-chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) – the second biggest opposition party in the parliament – was arrested in June in a fake bank accounts case.
He is among many opposition leaders facing corruption inquiries, including former three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. A court suspended Sharif’s seven-year jail sentence last month and released him on bail. Sharif is currently in London to seek medical treatment.
“President Zardari will stay in Pakistan. He is not going abroad for medical treatment,” Palwasha Khan, PPP’s deputy information secretary, told Arab News.
She also termed all corruption cases against the former president as “bogus and baseless.”
“Imran Niazi and his fascist ways are buried,” she said, referring to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s crusade against corruption since he came to power in August last year.
The opposition has termed the government’s anti-corruption campaign as “political victimization” on fictitious corruption cases.
“Political change is the order of the day. Imran and his team of nincompoops should pack up,” Palwasha Khan added.
Political analysts, however, said that the relief for opposition leaders in terms of their bails on medical grounds could be temporary, as all corruption cases against them were still pending in the courts.
“The bails are part of the legal process, but it doesn’t mean that any corruption case against Asif Zardari or Nawaz Sharif is withdrawn,” Dr. Rasul Bakhsh Rais, academic and political analyst, told Arab News.
He said that the accused would have to prove their innocence in the courts in different ongoing corruption cases, “otherwise this (bail) will be a temporary relief for Asif Zardari and others.”
