ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have decided to deepen their defense cooperation following the recent visit of Pakistan's Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Nadeem Raza to Riyadh, the ambassador to the Kingdom, Raja Ali Ejaz, told Arab News on Wednesday.
Gen. Raza who assumed office in November last year, made Riyadh the destination of his first official foreign trip, "which shows the importance of Pakistan’s bilateral relations with Saudi Arabia," Ejaz said.
“During the meetings of our chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff with Saudi political and military leadership, both countries expressed satisfaction with the current status of bilateral cooperation in the defense sector and also reaffirmed their resolve to further strengthen it," Ejaz said.
He added that Gen. Raza met with Saudi King Salman on Tuesday and they "reviewed the close relations between the two countries and ways to enhance cooperation, especially in the defense sector."
Gen. Raza also met with Saudi Arabia's Deputy Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Saudi Chief of General Staff Gen. Fayyadh bin Hamid Al-Ruwaili to discuss prospects for enhancing military cooperation, the ambassador said.
On Nov. 21, 2019, Prime Minister Imran Khan appointed Gen. Raza as the country’s new Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC). He formally took charge on Nov. 27 when he replaced the incumbent CJCSC, Gen. Zubair Hayat.
