PESHAWAR: Fearing the spread of COVID-19, Islamia College Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan asked applicants earlier this year to use an online admissions portal to apply for next year’s courses.
Hilarity ensued when last week, social media users posted a screenshot on Twitter showing an admission’s list for the university’s bachelor’s in computer science program, with ‘John Cena’, the famed American wrestler, actor, and television presenter, listed as number seven. Under Cena’s father’s name was the name of one of wrestling’s biggest stars, The Undertaker.

The screenshot triggered memes and jokes on Pakistani social media, with some users using the prank to point out flaws in the online applications system which they said they had been trying to bring to university administrations’ notice for months.
A director admissions at Islamia College Peshawar admitted the incident was a prank but said the list that was doing the rounds was not of students admitted but a provisional list of applicants who had paid a Rs100 online fee and registered to apply by providing basic information such as name, father’s name and grades.
“Now, anyone can register with a name of their choice but he or she needs to go through a physical and in person interview process for final admission,” Muhammad Iqbal Khan, director admissions at Islamia College Peshawar, told Arab News on Monday. “Even if a candidate registers her name as Elizabeth and is verified, we are officially bound to consider her for admission.”
Khan said someone had used the online admissions portal to play a prank: “The form bearing Cena’s name was on a provisional list but we removed his name the moment we noticed that it was a prank.”
“We have no concern whatever the name is,” Khan said. “We would have given admission had a candidate by the name of John Cena fulfilled the admission criteria.”
But social media users continued to have fun.
“Bye Bye America,” one Twitter user wrote with a picture of Cena. “I’m going to Islamia College Peshawar.”
