ISLAMABAD: Islamabad authorities sealed on Sunday the main hall of the city's largest mosque over noncompliance with coronavirus prevention guidelines.
Congregational prayers will not be offered in the inner hall of the Faisal Mosque, as precautionary measures were reportedly not followed on Friday. Prayers may still be offered in the mosque's courtyard, in the open air.
Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Muhammed Hamza Shafqaat said in a Twitter post that the inner hall of the mosque will be reopened once proper arrangements have been made.
He also shared photographs of district officials sealing the hall.
Pakistani president Dr. Arif Alvi last week said that mosques and the media had an important role to play in raising awareness about the importance of COVID-19 guidelines.
Government data released on Sunday showed Pakistan had recorded 58 COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, as the nationwide tally of fatalities jumped to 8,361 and infections reached 416,499.
After a peak of over 6,800 daily infections in June, the number fell to a low of 213 in August, and remained below 700 for most of the last three months. But there has been a sharp rise in new cases since last month.
Earlier this month, the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan ruled out a complete lockdown and decided to continue the “smart lockdown” policy with strict implementation of safety guidelines.
The country’s last comprehensive lockdown was lifted in May.
