ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's lawmaker and chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir, Shehryar Khan Afridi, launched Azad Jammu and Kashmir's first cricket tournament on Saturday, vowing that the initiative would help "raise voices of the people" from the disputed region to the rest of the world.
The Kashmir Premier League (KPL) will be played in the T20 format by six teams – the Rawalakot Hawks, Kotli Panthers, Mirpur Royals, Muzaffarabad Tigers, Overseas Warriors and the Bagh Stallions.
“The KPL will put Kashmir on the World Sports Map. We will raise Kashmir on all forums world over. Kashmir Committee would do everything to preserve, project and promote Kashmiri identity and its culture. ‘K’ word is the buzz word now,” Shehryar said in a statement.
He was joined by President Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Masood Khan and cricket icon Shahid Afridi, KPL's brand ambassador, for the inaugural event on Saturday.
Shehryar said that the KPL had been approved by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the federal government and is scheduled to begin in 2021.
A majority of the matches will be held in Azad Kashmir in Muzaffarabad, in addition to Mirpur and Rawalpindi, according to the statement.
“The talent of Kashmiri youth will reach the world through this league. The youth of Kashmir have to show the world how much talent it possessed,” it added.
In a separate statement released, on Saturday, President Khan said that the KPL "would play an important role" in bringing AJK's youth into mainstream Pakistani cricket.
"This league is a powerful platform that will help promote Azad Kashmir, the local talent and also portray the true image of peace and prosperity witnessed in AJK," he said.
Nuclear-armed India and Pakistan have twice gone to war over Kashmir since gaining independence from Britain in 1947.
Both Delhi and Islamabad claim Kashmir in full, but control only parts of it - territories recognised internationally as "Indian-administered Kashmir" and "Pakistan-administered Kashmir"
