As per the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the PAF had 70,000 active-duty personnel and operates 582 aircraft as of 2020. Its primary mandate and mission is “to provide, in synergy with other inter-services, the most efficient, assured and cost effective aerial defense of Pakistan.”
Under Article 243, the constitution of Pakistan appoints the president of Pakistan as the civilian commander-in-chief of the Pakistan Armed Forces. The chief of air staff, by statute a four-star commissioned air officer, is appointed by the president with consultation and confirmation from the prime minister of Pakistan.
According to Pakistani media reports, Babar joined the air force in 1986 as a fighter pilot and was serving as deputy chief of the air staff administration before his promotion to chief.
Speaking at the ceremony, Khan said, “I am confident that during his tenure PAF will scale to new heights of excellence.”
