ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are poised to sign a memorandum of understanding on tree plantation, ecotourism and promotion of renewable energy after getting the required approval from relevant authorities in the two countries, a senior advisor to Prime Minister Imran Khan on climate change told Arab News in an exclusive interview on Wednesday.
“Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has got a green vision which we are implementing in Pakistan through our 10 billion trees tsunami and the protected area initiative,” said Malik Amin Aslam, the PM's advisor. “Similarly, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also announced a forward-looking green vision.”
“We approached them [the Saudi authorities] and we have now got the approval from the Pakistani cabinet as well as the Royal Court in Saudi Arabia to sign the MoU [for collaboration],” he continued. “The [Saudi] ambassador was here yesterday, and he handed me the document.”
Aslam told Arab News in April that the two countries had decided to sign the MOU to declare their respective environmental programs “sister initiatives” and strengthen bilateral collaboration in the fields of climate change, renewable energy and forestry.
He added that the idea emerged after the Pakistani prime minister wrote a letter to the Saudi crown prince to laud the “Green Saudi Arabia” and “Green Middle East” programs and offered his administration’s assistance to the kingdom.
Khan mentioned in his note that the Saudi leader’s vision was closely aligned with his country’s own “Clean and Green Pakistan” initiative.
“The challenge of Climate Change is one that calls for greater international collaboration and a shared aspiration for sustainable development,” he wrote. “The world has no choice but to tread this green pathway and define a new development paradigm for the 21st century.”
Asked about the counters of the document Saudi envoy to Pakistan Nawaf bin Saeed al-Malki shared with him, Aslam said on Wednesday: “It’s a very wide scale MoU. We hope to get the signing ceremony done very quickly after which we will work out the detailed work plans for each sector.”
The prime minister’s advisor has also maintained previously the main idea behind formalizing the environmental cooperation with Saudi Arabia is to create synergy by learning from each other’s experience.
