RAWALPINDI: On July 29, while out for a walk in London, Pakistani educationist and chartered accountant Ghazi Taimoor found a wallet lying on Shoreditch High Street.
A bank card inside revealed that it belonged to a man named Rahul.
“Time to HUNT RAHUL DOWN,” Taimoor, 31, wrote in the first tweet of a thread about a Bollywood-style chase for Rahul that would end up being retweeted thousands of times and turn Taimoor into an overnight darling of the media and social media users in both Pakistan and India.
Guys! Just found this wallet on Shoreditch High street.

“I hope the takeaway is people start being kinder to one another so we can reimagine a society that is empathetic, collaborative and thriving,” Taimoor, who lives and works in Lahore but spends the summer months in London, told Arab News in a phone interview. “Where there’s more empathy and love, as opposed to hatred and bigotry, against one another.”
The chartered accountant, who currently works at the Lahore University of Management Sciences’ School of Education, said he had not expected his tweets — which outline the different steps and measures he took to try to locate Rahul — “to blow up at all.”
“I was more kind of tweeting to my friends and talking to them and asking for suggestions as I went, and I made the tweets very dramatic, as I do with most things anyway,” Taimoor said laughing, saying adding the drama had been easy because Rahul was a common name of Bollywood protagonists.
“It was all kind of Bollywood, especially because his name was also Rahul, which obviously links back to protagonists in Bollywood films.”

Rahul, whose last name Taimoor did not reveal out of respect for privacy, was overcome by the kind gesture, Taimoor said: “He couldn’t believe it, that a stranger is handing his wallet back. And he was kind of teary eyed and very happy and … completely blown away.”

Now five days since his viral tweet, Taimoor said he had been receiving messages from around the world, “especially from a lot of people in India who’ve been invested in this story.” He said he was particularly pleased that the tweets had brought together people from arch-rival nations India and Pakistan, who have fought at least two wars since 1947.
“I have even gotten messages from Indian celebrities in Bollywood on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter,” Taimoor said, calling the responses “heartwarming.”
“It’s sparked so many conversations on the human aspect of both India and Pakistan, which often gets lost in the politics,” Tamimoor added. “It’s been nice to see us get behind one story together.”
