ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi visited Tajikistan and Uzbekistan on Wednesday, during a regional diplomacy tour to discuss the unfolding situation in Afghanistan and present Pakistan’s perspective.
As the Taliban took control of Afghanistan over a week ago, Pakistan and other regional powers are looking to cement their grip. Pakistan has said it desires an early and inclusive political settlement and a smooth transition of power in the landlocked nation.
Qureshi’s three-day tour will also include visits to Iran and Turkmenistan. All of the countries he is visiting during the trip share a border with Afghanistan.
During the Dushanbe leg of his tour, Qureshi met Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin.
“Highlighting that both Pakistan and Tajikistan would benefit immensely from a peaceful and stable Afghanistan in terms of enhanced economic cooperation and connectivity, the Foreign Minister underlined importance of coordinated approach to realize shared objectives of a connected region,” the Pakistani foreign office said in a statement after Qureshi’s meetings.
“He also underscored the importance of continued international engagement as shared responsibility.”
The Tajik leaders welcomed Pakistan’s initiative to reach out to neighbors of Afghanistan for a coordinated approach, the foreign office said.
After his Dushanbe visit, Qureshi arrived in Tashkent, where he was received by Uzbek Deputy Foreign Minister Furqat Sidiqov.
On Tuesday, ahead of Qureshi’s trip, Pakistan has said neighboring countries have a “vital stake” in the peace, security and stability of Afghanistan. The minister’s visits aim to promote a coordinated regional approach as well as strengthen Pakistan’s engagement with Central and West Asia.
“The Foreign Minister’s visit to these countries will build on the recent high-level exchanges to further intensify close cooperative relations,” the foreign office said. “Pakistan desires to further deepen and broaden its multifaceted cooperation with these partners.”
