ISLAMABAD: Cricket West Indies (CWI) has said that it plans to fulfil its tour obligations wherever possible, including to Pakistan in December, the Trinidad Newsday newspaper reported on Friday.
West Indies are scheduled to play three One-day Internationals and three T20 Internationals in Pakistan.
CWI chief executive officer (CEO) Johnny Grave said the sport’s regional governing body would follow the same measures it did three years ago when the Windies, under Jason Mohammed, were swept convincingly in three T20 Internationals in Karachi.
“At this stage, our intention is to fulfil our touring obligations. We’ve got a pretty clear process that we go through with independent security experts, like we did in 2018,” the report quoted Grave as saying.
“We will follow that process, the board of directors, WIPA (West Indies Players’ Association), as well as the players themselves will review the plans and our reports, including the independent security advice. Most of our women’s and men’s players have played in Pakistan in the last few years.”
Pakistan’s efforts to revive international cricket suffered two consecutive setbacks with New Zealand abandoning its tour following a security threat last week, and England canceling its matches scheduled for next month, citing the same reason.
“We don’t have to make an imminent decision,” Grave told Newsday. “We will just go through the process first, with the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) and the security experts.”
International sides have largely shunned Pakistan after the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.
Since then, Pakistan have played most of their home international matches in the United Arab Emirates, but the PCB has pushed to host fixtures on home soil over the last three years.
After New Zealand and England pullouts, Pakistan are gearing up for the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to start on October 17.
