KARACHI: Young Pakistani creators who developed the country’s first Formula E car have designed a battery management system which their academic adviser said on Saturday would help introduce accessible electric vehicles to the local market.
Many actors have been drawn to the electric vehicle (EV) sector in Pakistan since it launched an ambitious policy last year to move vehicles over to electric power. Under the plan, the South Asian nation aims to reduce emission of greenhouse gases through the introduction of electric cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles and rickshaws.
The Formula Electric Racing team, which comprises students of the Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC), has been working on their electric vehicle since 2016 and has since developed its fourth version, which last month won second place at the Formula Student Russia (FSR), a an international design competition.

Dr. Bilal Muhammad Khan of PNEC, the students’ supervisor, told Arab News his team is now ready to launch a battery management system (BMS) to monitor and control power storage and deliver power to the vehicle.
He said the team aimed to ultimately support local EV production soon.
“We will be able to send this BMS system to the local industry of Pakistan, and hopefully contribute toward the development of cheap electric vehicles,” Khan said as the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), of which PNEC is part, presented the newest edition of the car to industry stakeholders in Karachi.
“The idea is to make Pakistan self-reliant in the sector,” Khan said. “We are using a lithium-ion batteries in the latest versions We have charging time of about seven hours whereas the fully charged car can go up to about eight to nine hours.”
He credits his students with the achievement.
“All the students who have worked on this project were undergraduate students” Khan said.
His first team was led by Abdul Aleem, second by Shariq Waqar, third by Osama Khan and the current one by Ismael Iqbal.
