KARACHI: Dozens of shops were completely gutted after a fire engulfed a downtown commercial market in the Pakistani port city of Karachi on Sunday evening, local officials and traders said.
Pakistan is known for poor safety protocols with several lives and millions of rupees lost to fire incidents at industries, markets and homes every year.
Karachi, the biggest megapolis and the main port city of Pakistan, is home to thousands of industrial units and some of the most recognizable skyscrapers in the country. The megapolis has only 22 fire stations, 14 functional fire tenders, two snorkels and a little more than a thousand firefighters for a city where over 700 fire incidents were reported just in the first three months of 2020.
On Sunday, firefighters were busy putting out the blaze in Cooperative Market in Karachi’s Saddar, the prime commercial center of the city.
“Over 50 shops have been completely gutted, but the exact amount of damages can only be ascertained once the fire is extinguished,” Mehmood Ahmed, president of the small traders’ association, told Arab News over phone from the scene.
There are over 300 garments and electronics shops at the ground floor of the multi-story market, according to Mehmood.
“It’s a huge financial loss but luckily no one has been injured as the market was closed on Sunday,” he said, complaining that fire tenders didn’t arrive on time due to which the fire spread.
Firefighters from the Karachi Fire Department, Karachi Port Trust and Pakistan Navy were trying to contain the blaze till the filing of this report.
Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab also visited the scene to supervise the operation, his spokesperson said.
Speaking to media, Karachi Commissioner Muhammad Iqbal Memon said it was a “third-degree fire.” He said there were around 300-400 shops in the market, of which 35 had been completely gutted.
People were quickly evacuated from the area and roads leading to the market were blocked soon after the fire broke out, according to initial reports.
In one of the worst fire incidents in the country’s history, flames ravaged a textile factory complex in Karachi in 2012, killing almost 300 workers trapped behind locked doors.
