ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Sunday held in-depth consultations with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Hassan Shoukry, exchanging views and perspectives on a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues.
The Egyptian foreign minister arrived in Islamabad earlier in the day to attend a two-day meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on March 22 and 23.
Pakistan and Egypt have tried to broaden and deepen their relationship in recent years, making the officials of the two countries enhance their interaction by increasing the frequency of bilateral visits.
Prime Minister Imran Khan's aide on interfaith harmony Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi said that Pakistan and Egypt were "tied in brotherly relations" as the Egyptian delegation arrived in Pakistan.
"Foreign Minister Qureshi highlighted the potential for increased cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, defense, tourism, agriculture and higher education," the foreign office informed after the meeting. "Both Foreign Ministers concurred on the need to explore opportunities for such bilateral cooperation."
Applauding the close cooperation between their governments at various regional and multilateral forums, the two officials also agreed to enhance high-level exchanges and to strengthen institutional engagement for adding further momentum to close collaboration on all issues of mutual interest.
"The Foreign Minister [Qureshi] also stressed the need to foster closer inter-Parliamentary cooperation as part of enhanced people-to-people exchanges between the two brotherly countries," the statement added.
The two officials also had exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan, Indian-administered Kashmir and the war in Ukraine.
"In the context of the 27th Conference of Parties (CoP) of UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, scheduled to be held in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, later this year, the two Foreign Ministers discussed priority actions for tackling Climate Change particularly the need for channeling enhanced climate finance for developing countries," the official statement said. "Foreign Minister Qureshi assured Pakistan's support to the Egyptian Presidency of CoP-27 for a successful Conference."
The Egyptian foreign minister will also attend the CFM meeting, an annual event held to take important decisions and adopt new policies by OIC member states.
The OIC foreign ministers last met in Islamabad in December 2021 for the 17th Extraordinary Session that focused on Afghanistan's economic meltdown.
