The film marks the directorial debut of Jeff Fowler and stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of the titular hero, Jim Carrey as his nemesis Dr. Robotnik, alongside James Marsden and Tika Sumpter. With the help of a small-town sheriff, Sonic attempts to avoid capture by a government scientist who will stop at nothing to catch him.
The film is a CGI/live action hybrid and an American–Japanese joint venture. It was co-produced and financed by Paramount Pictures, with Neal Moritz serving as producer through his Original Film banner.
