JEDDAH, 3 June — Gulf Cooperation Council yesterday lambasted the massive Israeli military campaign against unarmed Palestinians, saying the brutal Israeli attacks on the Palestinian people overshadowed all events in the Middle East region.
“There are evidences which prove that Israel wanted to continue its aggressive practices and plans to finish off the Palestinian issue and end the peace process,” Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Muhammmad ibn Mubarak Al-Khalifa said.
Addressing a regular meeting of the GCC foreign ministers in Jeddah yesterday, Sheikh Muhammad said the GCC’s stand on Gulf security would not change “until other parties take stances that would contribute to protecting the security and stability of this vital region.” The meeting was also attended by Prince Saud Al-Faisal of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Hamad ibn Jassim Al-Thani of Qatar, Sheikh Muhammad Sabah Al-Salim Al-Sabah of Kuwait Yousuf ibn Alawi of Oman and Hamdan ibn Zayed Al-Nahayan of the United Arab Emirates.
The meeting focused on Abu Dhabi’s territorial dispute with Iran over the three strategic islands — Abu Mussa and the Greater and Lesser Tunb, which are currently under Iranian control.The ministers from the six GCC states will review progress toward the implementation of the GCC customs union and the negotiations with the European Union. The cooperation and coordination among the member states are growing day by day, he pointed out. In this respect, he referred to the resolutions taken by the GCC leaders regarding the customs union, single currency and joint defense.
