ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday unveiled a 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup which is scheduled to be held in Australia from October 16 to November 13.
Out of the seven T20 World Cup events to date, Pakistan have won the title in 2009 in the United Kingdom, though they also fought for the trophy after reaching the final match in 2007.
The consistent performance of the national team allowed it to feature in semifinals in 2010, 2012 and 2021.
In the T20 World Cup squad, top-order batter Shan Masood has been included for the first time along with fast bowlers Mohammad Wasim Junior and Shaheen Shah Afridi, while Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Haris and Shahnawaz Dahani have been named as the three traveling reserves.
“We have a team that can perform strongly in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022,” said PCB chief selector Muhammad Wasim. “That’s why we have shown faith and confidence in almost the same set of players who have been part of the T20I squad post the 2021 World Cup in the UAE.”
He maintained these players had performed well since November 2021, helping the team win nine out of the last 13 T20Is.
“We have invested in these cricketers and it is fair to them that they get the opportunity to show their mettle in the World Cup, an event for which they have been preparing and training hard,” he continued. “We needed to ensure continuity and support to these players, and that’s precisely what we have done.”
The PCB official said Pakistani pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, who recently got injured, was likely to resume bowling early next month.
According to a statement issued by the cricket board, Pakistan’s World Cup-bound squad would also feature in a T20I tri-series in Christchurch from 7-14 October where Bangladesh and New Zealand will be the other participating sides.
The PCB can make changes to the World Cup team until October 15 without seeking the approval of the event’s technical committee.
Pakistan’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup team have the following players.
Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Asif Ali, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Wasim Junior, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood and Usman Qadir.
The team’s traveling reserves include Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Haris and Shahnawaz Dahani.
