ISLAMABAD: As England gears up for its first-ever T20I series on Pakistani soil, English cricketer Phil Salt said on Friday that he was “proud to be a part” of the first squad from his country to tour Pakistan for an international series after 17 years.
England arrived in Pakistan on Thursday to play a seven-match T20I series against the green shirts, starting from September 20 till October 2. England last visited Pakistan in 2005 to play three Tests and five One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi.
Four years later, however, a militant attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore suspended international cricket in the country, though the situation changed after Zimbabwe, West Indies and Sri Lanka visited Pakistan in recent years.
In September 2021, New Zealand, Australia and England canceled their Pakistan tour, citing concerns over “mental and physical well-being.” However, Australia arrived in Pakistan after 24 years in March 2022 to play a historic, complete series.
“It’s something special to be a part of coming back here, in an England shirt, for the first time in 17 years so, you know I think the guys are fully aware of the gravity and are proud to be a part of it,” Salt said during the England team’s training session in Karachi.
Salt has been a regular feature in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) cricket league and has played for the Islamabad United franchise. However, he said the England team respected Pakistan as a strong cricket squad.
“We know that Pakistan are a good side and with the World Cup coming up, every team wants to be sort of putting its best foot forward and want to be hitting the form right now,” he added.
He said in Pakistan’s home territory, England would have to play well.
