KARACHI: At least 17 people, including 12 children, were burnt alive when a bus carrying flood survivors from Karachi to their homes in Khairpur Nathan Shah in the southern Sindh province caught fire on the Super Highway near Nooriabad, a senior health official said on Thursday.
All 80 people on board the bus were flood victims who had taken shelter in Karachi after the deluge submerged their villages in Khairpur Nathan Shah in upper Sindh.
Monsoon deluges, likely worsened by climate change, battered the country for months, killing at least 1,700 people and wiping out infrastructure. The UN last week revised its flash appeal fivefold, from $160 million to $816 million, to reflect the magnitude of the disaster.
UN officials are concerned about health, nutrition, drinking water, shelter and food security for the vast swaths of the population who have lost their crops, homes and livestock.
“Around 17 bodies have been recovered from the bus. Of them 12 are children, and two women and three men,” Qasim Soomro, parliamentary secretary health Sindh, told Arab News, saying ten people had minor burn injuries and were out of danger while a woman complaining of breathing issues was taken to Jamshoro for treatment.
“Another body, that of a child, is suspected to be still in the bus but since the bodies have merged after being burnt, we are not hundred percent sure,” Soomro said.
He said the flood victims were all from the same community and had taken shelter in Karachi after flood waters hit their villages.
Speaking to the media, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nooriabad Wajid Thaheem said the victims belonged to the Mughairi community and were returning to Khairpur Nathan Shah from Karachi. He said the fire, which engulfed the entire bus, was believed to have been caused by a short circuit in the air conditioner.
Taking notice of the incident, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah ordered officials to investigate the cause of the incident and submit a report.
“The injured persons should immediately be moved to the hospital and the administration should provide all kinds of support to the families,” his spokesperson said, quoting Shah in a statement.
