ISLAMABAD: In a statement released through close aides, ex-premier Imran Khan, injured on Thursday in a gun attack at a protest march he was leading, blamed the assault on Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and ISI director-general for counter intelligence, Major General Faisal Naseer.
Khan was shot in the shin on Thursday when shots were fired at his anti-government protest convoy near the city of Wazirabad, nearly 200 km (120 miles) from the capital, Islamabad. His aides have said it was “well planned assassination.”
In a video message, Asad Umar, senior leader of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party said he was delivering a message on behalf of the party chairman, who had blamed three people for the attack.
“Those three people are Shehbaz Sharif, Rana Sanaullah and Major General Faisal,” Umar said. “His demand is that all three of these individuals be removed from their positions ... If that doesn’t happen, then there will be protests nationwide and things will not be business as usual in Pakistan.”
Khan has previously named Naseer and the ISI spy agency’s Islamabad sector commander, Brig. Fahim Raza, as being against a crackdown on his party, including the custodial torture of party members.
Umar said the chief minister of Punjab province, where Khan’s party is in power, had promised to form a joint investigation team (JIT) to probe the assault.
“We are waiting for Khan’s next protest call and will do things accordingly,” he added.
Responding to Khan’s accusations, the interior minister held a press conference and said the government “strongly” condemned the attack on Khan.
“JIT should be immediately formed so that from the very beginning there can be a transparent and credible inquiry and the true picture can be brought before the people,” Sanaullah said.
“We have always condemned, always been against such [violent] thinking, such philosophy … We fully condemn this [attack], the intention behind it, the thought behind it.”
The military has not responded to Khan’s accusation that a serving official was behind the attack. PM Sharif has “strongly” condemned the attack and called for a probe.
