ISLAMABAD: Ten leading foreign women cricketers, representing seven different countries, will participate in the upcoming exhibition matches of the Pakistan Women’s League in Rawalpindi next week, the country’s cricket regulating body said on Saturday.
Last year in October, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) published its plan to launch a women’s league to ensure the emergence of a strong “cricket-playing nation across all formats and genders.”
In its latest statement, the PCB said the exhibition matches would be held hours before the Pakistan Super League (PSL) contests on March 8, 10, and 11.
The Pakistan Women’s League is tentatively planned to begin from September. The women’s matches this month are scheduled to begin at 2pm, followed by the PSL games at 7pm.
“Pakistan Cricket Board today unveiled the two women’s squads for the three Women’s League exhibition matches, which will be played ahead of the PSL 8 matches in Rawalpindi on 8, 10, and 11 March,” said the statement.
Pakistani cricketer Bismah Maroof will lead the Amazons, which include Ireland’s Laura Delany, England’s trio of Lauren Winfield-Hill, Maia Bouchier, and Tammy Beaumont, and Australia’s Tess Flintoff.
“Nida Dar will lead the Super Women, which will comprise Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu, Danni Wyatt of England, Jahanara Alam of Bangladesh, South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt, and Lea Tahuhu of New Zealand,” the statement added.
The PCB said the ten foreign stars would be accompanied by Pakistan’s 20 elite cricketers and four Under 19 players who recently featured in the International Cricket Council’s U19 Women’s T20 World Cup. These include Areesha Noor, Eyman Fatima, Shawaal Zulfiqar, and Syeda Aroob Shah, as well as two emerging cricketers Fatima Khan and Syeda Masooma Zahra.
“The 36 cricketers have been equally divided into two sides with the playing line-ups to include a maximum of four and minimum of three foreign players and a minimum of one emerging or U19 player,” the PCB said.
