ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s political leaders on Saturday expressed optimism the historic agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran to normalize diplomatic relations would lead to greater peace and stability in the Middle East and open up “new opportunities” in the region.
The two Middle Eastern states decided to restore ties and reopen diplomatic missions while reaching an agreement brokered by the Chinese authorities.
The development was announced in a trilateral statement which mentioned the reopening of embassies within two months along with renewal of bilateral cooperation in other fields.
“This China-mediated deal augurs well for peace, stability and economic development in the Middle East and Muslim world,” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced in a Twitter post.
“It shows that with collective wisdom, win-win outcomes are possible,” he added.
Pakistan’s other political leaders also welcomed the development, saying it would create exciting opportunities for peace, trade and business in the region.
“It is a powerful diplomatic win for both Saudi Arabia and Iran and will definitely have long-term positive impact not only in the Middle East but also other regions,” Pakistan Peoples Party leader Sehar Kamran told Arab News.
“The resumption of ties will also open up new opportunities of trade and peace for regional countries, especially for Pakistan which has cordial relations with both the countries,” she said.
Kamran maintained the development showed it was possible to resolve conflicts through negotiations by using diplomatic channels, adding the world should learn “a lesson of peace and love from it.”
Pakistan’s Jamaat-e-Islami party termed the deal a “positive development” that would help address differences between the two Muslim states.
“It is a positive development that must be lauded by the world since it will help bring peace and stability to the region,” Qaisar Sharif, JI’s secretary information, told Arab News.
“We view it as an opportunity for Pakistan as well to enhance diplomatic ties with both countries and tap new opportunities for trade and business in the region,” he said.
Sharif maintained it was “a long-awaited development,” adding it would have a positive impact on the Muslim world.
Reacting to the development, Pakistan’s foreign office praised the “sagacious leadership” of the two Middle Eastern countries in a statement issued on Friday.
“Pakistan will continue to play a constructive role in the Middle East and the region,” it added. “We hope this positive step would define a template for regional cooperation and harmony.”
