ISLAMABAD: The Multan Sultans cruised to their third consecutive Pakistan Super League (PSL) final on Wednesday after thrashing the Lahore Qalandars by 84 runs in the first PSL playoff at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Set a target of 161 runs to win, the Qalandars started poorly, with Sheldon Cottrell dismissing Mirza Tahir Baig for only 8 runs. Abdullah Shafique, who has been in sublime form throughout this year's PSL, was trapped lbw by the left-arm bowler on the second ball he played.
Cottrell didn't stop there, as he dismissed the Qalandars' skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi for 0 runs. The left-arm pacer was once again in the mix, catching Sam Billings when he scored only 19 runs from 27 balls off an Ihsanullah delivery.
David Wiese and Rashid Khan were unable to impress either, dismissed for scores of 12 and 0 respectively. The match ended in jubilation for the Sultans when Haris Rauf was caught off an Abbas Afridi delivery by skipper Rizwan behind the stumps.
Cottrell was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3-20 from three overs while Usama Mir picked up two wickets as well. Anwar Ali, Ihsanullah, Afridi and Keiron Pollard took a wicket each to ensure Qalandars were bowled out in the 15th over of the match.
Earlier, Pollard scored 57 runs off 34 balls. He hit six sixes and a single boundary in his innings. Sultans' skipper Mohammad Rizwan scored 33 runs off 29 balls while opener Usman Khan scored 29 runs off 28 balls.
In-form Sultans' batter Rilee Rossouw was unable to impress, managing only 13 runs from 12 balls before Zaman Khan dismissed him. Tim David's late blitz helped the Qalandars reach 160 as he scored 22 runs from 15 balls.
Left-handed batter Khushdil Shah was bowled by Rauf on the very first ball he faced.
Multan Sultans will play the winner of the PSL eliminator between Peshawar Zalmi and Islamabad United, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday.
The final is scheduled to take place on March 19.
Champions in 2021 and runners-up in 2022 after they lost to the Qalandars, this is the third consecutive time that the Sultans have qualified for the PSL final.
