ISLAMABAD: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) acknowledged on Wednesday it was facing financial constraints that were making it difficult for its management to pay salaries to some of its employees, though it denied reports that the situation was likely to pose risks to its operations.
Some media outlets recently reported PIA pilots were planning to boycott flights due to the non-payment of their salaries in the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. They also maintained that the national flag carrier was facing a shortage of funds amid the economic downturn in Pakistan.
“There is no risk of operations being affected due to non-payment of salaries,” the national airline said in a brief statement. “PIA faced financial difficulties this month due to the country’s economic situation. These difficulties were compounded by a few necessary payments. However, PIA paid the salaries of Group 1 to 4 staff on time.”
The statement said the salaries of PIA officials had been delayed, though they would also be paid “in the next few days.”
“All PIA officers including pilots are engaged in discharging their duties with full zeal and responsibility and PIA flights are fully operational,” it added.
PIA statement comes only a day after finance minister Ishaq Dar promised to support the Aviation Division to restructure the national airline and turn it into a profitable entity.
The airline faced a major credibility crisis about three years ago after former aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan declared in parliament that a large number of its pilots had fake licenses.
The statement led to the suspension of PIA flight operations to some lucrative destinations around the world, compounding the airline’s financial challenges.
