ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan women’s football team on Tuesday “made history” by winning their first ever competitive fixture at the Women’s Olympic Qualifier tournament by beating hosts Tajikistan 1-0, the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) said.
Pakistan, who were already out of the race for the second stage of the qualifiers after losing to Philippines 0-4 and to Hong Kong 0-2, managed to beat hosts Tajikistan at the Hisor Central Stadium.
Pakistan drew blood in the 24th minute of the match when forward Zahmena Malika netted a goal after Pakistan’s Amina Hanif made a crucialm pass via the back of her heel. The second half saw no goals being scored despite several attempts by both sides to net the ball.
Pakistan took the match 1-0 and finished at number three in Group E of the qualifiers.
“Full Time. HISTORY MADE! We get our first-ever win in an Olympic Qualifier campaign. Zahmena Malik with the only goal of the game in the 24th minute! Onwards and Upwards. Pakistan Zindabad,” the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) wrote in a Twitter post on Tuesday.
While Pakistani finished at number three in Group E, the Philippines advanced to the second round of the qualifier.
The national team, comprising 22 players, along with the coaching staff, reached Tajikistan on April 2 from Dubai. A total of 26 teams, divided into seven groups, are playing to win in the first round of the qualifiers. Winners of each group will then advance to the second round. The top two teams will qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics women’s football tournament in France to represent the AFC.
In January this year, Pakistan finished second in a four-nation football series played in Saudi Arabia. The green shirts won their opening match against Comoros 1-0 but lost their second match to Mauritius 2-1. Their final match against hosts Saudi Arabia ended in a 1-1 draw that featured a famous free kick goal from Pakistan captain Maria Khan.
