KHAPLU, Gilgit-Baltistan: Naila Kiani, a Dubai-based Pakistani woman climber, successfully summited on Sunday the world’s tallest peak, Mt Everest, becoming the first Pakistani woman to climb five out of 14 peaks above the height of 8,000 meters.
Kiani summited the 8,848-meter Mount Everest, considered dangerous because of the risk of frequent avalanches and the Khumbu Icefall, at around 8am on Sunday morning. She is the first international climber to pull off the feat in 2023.
Kiani has previously scaled K2, Gasherbrum-I and Gasherbrum-II, and Mount Annapurna in Nepal.
“We are thrilled to announce that Ms Naila Kiani from Pakistan has become the first international climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest in the year 2023,” Imagine Nepal, a Nepalese tour company that managed Kiani’s expedition, said in a statement.
“Along with Imagine Nepal’s Sherpa, Mr.Pasang Temba Sherpa and Ms Naila reached the summit at 08:02 am on 14th May 2023. We congratulate Ms Naila and Mr.Pasang Temba Sherpa on their incredible feat.”
Mingma G, a renowned Nepali climber who owns Imagine Nepal, told Arab News Kiani was currently descending to Camp 4 of Everest.
“She might continue to Lhotse summit today evening,” he added.
Karrar Haidri, head of Alpine Club of Pakistan that manages expeditions in the South Asian country, also congratulated Kiani on successfully summiting the world’s tallest mountain.
“She intends to summit Lhotse [8,516-meter-high] soon after Everest,” Haidri told Arab News over the phone.
“She would become the first woman to summit six 8-thousanders after the ascent of Lhotse.”
Kiani is a Dubai-based Pakistani banker, an amateur boxer, and a mother of two kids. She garnered massive fame online when images of her wedding shoot at the K2 basecamp went viral on social media in 2018.
Kiani summited the 8,035m Gasherbrum-II in 2021, 8,068m Gasherbrum-I and 8,611m K2 in July 2022, and the 8,091m Mt Annapurna in 2023.
Aside from Kiani, Pakistan’s Samina Baig has summited two ‘eight-thousanders,’ K2 and the Everest.
