PESHAWAR: Two on-duty policemen and a security guard were killed in Pakistan’s northwestern Swat Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province after a group of armed attackers opened fire on them, confirmed the district administration of the area on Thursday.
The Pakistani Taliban, or the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the attack.
There has been a surge in militant violence against police and security forces in the restive northwest since the TTP called off its fragile truce with the government last November.
“Sudden firing by unknown persons near the Mingora vegetable market in Swat killed two on-duty policemen,” the official statement said.
It identified the slain uniformed personnel as Umara Khan and Ashraf Ali. A security guard of a private bank located in the same market also received gunshot wounds and was shifted to a hospital in critical condition.
Later, Amjad Khan, an official of Swat district administration, told Arab News he had “succumbed to injuries.”
The district administration statement announced the police cordoned off the area soon after the incident and launched a search operation to arrest the attackers.
Pakistan’s interior minister Rana Sanaullah issued a statement on Thursday, condemning the attack and praising the police for making ultimate sacrifices for the security of Pakistan and its people.
Earlier this year in January, a suicide bomber killed more than a hundred policemen and injured scores of others during a prayer congregation in Peshawar. However, the TTP had denied involvement in that attack.
Speaking to Arab News, Zia Nasir Yousafzai, who leads the People’s Awakening Movement in Swat, said the families of the slain policemen demanded decisive action against such killings while protesting with the bodies of their loved ones.
“Once again, the situation continues to deteriorate and we protest the unending wave of target killings of police officials,” he said. “It is tragic that we and the members of the bereaved families are demanding protection for the police which shows that the region has plunged into insecurity and is witnessing poor law and order situation.”
