ISLAMABAD: Pakistan defeated India emphatically by 128 runs on Sunday to lift the Emerging Asia Cup final in Colombo, with batter Tayyab Tahir scoring an impressive century to guide his team to victory against their arch-rivals.
List A cricket is recognized as a second-tier level of international cricket, one level below the full senior international cricket teams. Pakistan A, led by batter Mohammad Haris, featured a few players who have played international cricket for the South Asian country in the senior men’s team. These included Tayyab Tahir, Mohammad Wasim Junior, Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan.
After impressive half-centuries from Ayub and Farhan’s opening pair, Pakistan were off to a flying start. Tahir smashed a 71-ball 108 innings, helping the green shirts amass 352/8 on the scoreboard at the end of 50 overs.
In response, the Indian batters fared poorly, with opening batter Abhishek Sharma the only Indian cricketer to score a half-century in the match. Pakistan’s Sufiyan Muqeem exploited the conditions well to finish with 3/66 while Wasim ended with figures of 2/26 from 6 overs. Mehran Mumtaz and Arshad Iqbal took two wickets each to ensure India were bowled out for 224 at the end of 40 overs.
“This is what happens, when you score big runs in a final, the opposition comes under pressure and then if you get back-to-back wickets it gets tough for them.” Haris said at the end of the match. “We had tried different combinations in the last four-five matches, tried different players, and it worked well for us.”
Haris said he was happy with how the players had stayed motivated throughout the tournament and in the end, managed to win it.
“We have the Asia Cup also coming up and the World Cup too after that. Sri Lanka is a tough place to play spin. So it was good preparation,” he added.
Indian skipper Yash Dhull praised Pakistan for batting impressively, adding that the green shirts put up a “big target” on the board.
“None of us have played international cricket so it was a good platform for us to play and a good environment,” he added.
Pakistan’s senior men’s team, led by skipper Babar Azam, will lock horns with India on September 2 for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 in Kandy.
