ISLAMABAD: Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi has congratulated the people of Pakistan on their 77th Independence Day by sharing a space-view of the country’s capital, Islamabad, on a social media website.
Pakistan has always cherished close diplomatic and defense relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Gulf country has a population of over 1.5 million, and Pakistani expatriates constitute 12.5 percent of it by being the second-largest national group after the Indian nationals.
Pakistani expats in the UAE remitted $5.10 billion back home in 2022, second only to remittances from Saudi Arabia which were recorded at $6.67 billion last year.
“Happy Independence Day to all Pakistanis, especially those living in the UAE,” Al Neyadi, who is scheduled to conclude his six-month journey to space and return to Earth next month, wrote on the X messaging platform on Monday.
“As one of the largest expat communities in my country, we have lived together for years and learned a lot about your rich culture. Here’s your capital, Islamabad, from space,” he wrote as he uploaded an image of Islamabad captured from the International Space Station.
UAE’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, was also lit up on Monday evening to celebrate the South Asian nation’s Independence Day, which marks the country’s creation when the British left India and split the subcontinent in 1947.
“Wishing the people of Pakistan a day filled with pride, unity, and prosperity as you celebrate the rich heritage and achievements of your great nation. May the future hold even greater success and happiness for all Pakistanis. Happy Independence Day,” a post on the building’s official Instagram page read.
