CINCINNATI, Ohio, 16 August 2003 — Guillermo Coria, the highest seed remaining in the Tennis Masters Series-Cincinnati draw, moved into the quarterfinals on Thursday with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Mikhail Youzhny of Russia.

Sixth seed Coria, who won three clay court titles last month, established a 70 percent first serve percentage.

He was joined in the quarterfinals by red-hot American Andy Roddick who beat James Blake in straight sets.

Coria was able to save four of five break point opportunities in the 75-minute match, only surrendering his serve in the third game of the first set.

Coria was able to break Youzhny’s serve on five of 12 chances — in the second, sixth and eighth games of the first set and the fourth and sixth games of the second set.

The diminutive Coria is slated to play the 6ft 5in Max Mirnyi, of Belarus, in the quarterfinals.

Mirnyi earned his quarterfinal berth with a tough 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4 third round win over Hicham Arazi of Morocco.

American Robby Ginepri reached his third Masters Series level quarterfinal of the year with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Gaston Gaudio of Argentina.

The 43rd-ranked Ginepri scored back-to-back quarterfinal appearances at the Tennis Masters Series events in Indian Wells and Miami last March.

Schuettler earned his spot in the quarterfinals with a tough 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4 victory over American veteran Todd Martin.

Playing the best tennis of his career, sixth-seeded Andy Roddick improved his record against fellow American Blake to 7-0 courtesy of a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 third round win.

In their seven outings dating back to the 2000 Burbank Challenger, Roddick has only lost two of 16 sets played against the 27th-ranked Blake.

The fourth-ranked Roddick has set himself up as the player to beat at the upcoming US Open, having won his first Masters Series trophy last week in Montreal as well as the Indianapolis title in July.

Clijsters Upset by Unseeded Krasnoroutskaya

In Toronto, new world No. 1 Kim Clijsters crashed out of the $1.3 million Canadian Open when she lost 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 to unseeded Russian Lina Krasnoroutskaya in the third round on Thursday.

But Clijsters’ fellow Belgian, second seed Justine Henin-Hardenne, went through to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Russian Nadia Petrova.

Her defeat marked the first time Clijsters has failed to make the semifinals of an event this season. The Belgian, who took over the top spot from Serena Williams with her title triumph in Los Angeles last week, looked poised for an easy workout as she raced through the opening set in 19 minutes.

Krasnoroutskaya, whose previous best performance was reaching the semi-finals in Doha, kept up the pressure in the third set to secure a quarterfinal clash with Slovenia’s Katarina Srebotnik.

Amelie Mauresmo of France, the third seed and defending champion, advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Fabiola Zuluaga of Colombia.

Mauresmo was joined in the last eight by a trio of Russians — ninth seed Elena Dementieva, 10th seed Vera Zvonareva and 12th seed Elena Bovina — and the unseeded Paola Suarez of Argentina.

Suarez upset fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-0 while Zvonareva put out eighth-seeded Yugoslav Jelena Dokic 6-3, 6-2.

Dementieva overcame fifth seed Anastasia Myskina of Russia 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 and Bovina notched a 6-2, 6-1 win over seventh-seeded South African Amanda Coetzer.
