ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan army said it had conducted two operations on Thursday, with four militants killed in the first and one soldier in the second.
The first shootout took place in Badaber, Peshawar district, and the second one in Kulachi, Dera Ismail Khan district, the military said.
“Own troops effectively engaged the terrorists' location as a result of which 4 x terrorists were sent to hell, including a High Value Terrorist,” the military said of the operation in Peshawar, adding that the three militants were “highly wanted by law enforcement agencies.”
In another operation conducted in general area Kulachi, Dera Ismail Khan District, “after intense exchange of fire with terrorists, Lance Naik Muhammad Ejaz Khan (age: 34 years, resident of: Bagh, Azad Kashmir) having fought gallantly, embraced Shahadat.”
No group has as yet claimed it was involved in the shootouts but most attacks in this area are carried out by the Pakistani Taliban, also known as the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP — a separate group but allied with the Afghan Taliban who in August 2021 seized Afghanistan as US and NATO troops were in the final stages of their pullout from the country after 20 years of war.
Islamabad says the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan has emboldened the Pakistani Taliban who have stepped up attacks against police and troops across the country since last November when the group called off a tenuous truce with the government.
The Afghan Taliban deny they allow Afghan soil to be used by militants.
