ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Monday ordered that matches of the ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League should be held across the country instead of a few select cities, state-run APP reported.
PSL is a men’s Twenty20 cricket league contested by six city-based franchise teams. The league was founded in 2015 by the Pakistan Cricket Board. The first edition, that included five teams, was played entirely in the UAE due to security reasons, while the second edition saw the first step toward a homecoming with the final between Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators at the Qaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
The 2018 edition was the first instance that two Pakistani cities hosted PSL matches. Lahore was host to two play-offs while Karachi staged the final in which Islamabad United prevailed against defending champions Peshawar Zalmi. It was also in this season that Multan Sultans was added as the sixth franchise.
The 2019 season saw an unprecedented eight games in Pakistan but since 2020, the series has been played entirely in Pakistan. The next edition is due to be held in February 2024.
“Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Monday directed to evolve a comprehensive strategy to organize the cricket matches of Pakistan Super League Season 9 across the country,” APP reported after the PM attended a briefing on PCB affairs, and was informed that PSL matches would be held in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan.
“Kakar highlighted that the game of cricket played an important role in uniting the entire nation culminating national spirit,” APP said, adding that the PM said it was important to promote cricket in remote areas of the country as well.
“There is immense cricket talent in Sindh, Balochistan, South Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, newly merged districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir, that needs to be given a chance to be represented at the national level,” Kakar added.
The prime minister directed immediate restoration work at Quetta’s Bugti Stadium and Peshawar’s Arbab-e Niaz Stadium and said the Gwadar Cricket Stadium and Pissan Stadium in the Nagar area of Gilgit-Baltistan should also be made capable of holding cricket series. It was unclear if any of the stadiums would be ready for matches of PSL-9.
The prime minister directed the PCB to conduct an immediate survey of Pissan Stadium in the Nagar District, saying work for the rehabilitation of existing cricket stadiums should be started on an emergency basis.
“The prime minister directed that a plan should be prepared for the establishment of new cricket stadiums equipped with modern facilities along with international standard hotels and shopping areas to promote tourism as well,” APP said. “He also directed to hand over the four cricket grounds in Islamabad to the PCB for the development of cricket.”
Construction of cricket infrastructure is underway in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Gujranwala, Peshawar and Bahawalpur, the PM was informed. while Qaddafi Stadium Lahore, National Stadium Karachi and Multan Stadium were being converted to solar energy.
