ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Monday arrived on a day-long visit to Kuwait to condole the death of the country’s ruler, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the premier’s office said in a statement.
Pakistan marked Monday as a “day of mourning” for Sheikh Nawaf, who passed away at the age of 86 on Saturday. His casket was draped in his country’s national flag, with members of the Al-Sabah family and several high-profile officials attending his funeral on Sunday.
“During his meeting with the new Amir His Highness Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, the [Pakistani] Prime Minister offered sincerest and heart felt condolences on behalf of himself, the leadership, government and the people of Pakistan,” the PM’s office said.
“Pakistani nation stands united with our Kuwaiti brothers in this time of sorrow and grief,” the statement added, quoting Kakar.
“The State of Kuwait has lost a visionary leader, who transformed Kuwait into a prosperous State. He will be remembered as well-wisher and friend of Pakistan. He made great contributions in advancing bilateral relations between the two brotherly states.”
Earlier, Radio Pakistan showed footage of Kakar departing while the Kuwait ambassador saw him off at the Noor Khan Airbase in Rawalpindi.
“Caretaker PM @anwaar_kakar has left for Kuwait to condole sad demise of Amir of Kuwait,” the radio station reported, showing footage of the PM departing.
Several foreign dignitaries, including the Iraqi prime minister, Iranian foreign minister and US defense secretary, arrived in the Gulf state of Kuwait on Monday to express condolences. Jordan’s King Abdullah, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas also visited the OPEC oil producer. Kuwait has been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause.
Kuwait announced an official mourning period for 40 days and the closure of official departments for three days after the announcement of the late emir’s death.
Pakistan’s caretaker prime minister went to Kuwait on a two-day official visit last month to interact with the country’s top leadership, and sign a number of bilateral cooperation and investment deals related to manpower, information technology, mineral exploration, food security, energy and defense.
