ISLAMABAD: Independent candidates backed by former prime minister Imran Khan secured the highest number of seats in national polls held this week, as Pakistan’s election regulator issued the final results of the closely watched polls on Sunday, two days after voting closed
Pakistan’s 2024 national elections were marred by protests and rigging allegations by political parties due to significant delays in vote counting. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) set a deadline of 2:00 a.m. on Friday for the announcement of results in constituencies where polling continued without any delays, while the deadline for constituencies where obstructions were witnessed in the voting process was 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
However, the ECP released the unofficial results of 264 National Assembly seats out of 266 on Sunday afternoon.
“The PML-N [Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz] has emerged as the largest political party with 75 seats in the National Assembly elections,” the state-run Radio Pakistan said in a report.
Independent candidates, most of them affiliated with Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won 101 seats while the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) won 54 seats. Karachi-based Muttahida Quami Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) secured 17 seats.
The Jamiat Ulama-e-Pakistan (JUI-F) won four seats while the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) secured three seats. The Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) and the Balochistan National Party (BNP) won two seats each.
Meanwhile, the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen Pakistan (MWM), Pakistan Muslim League (Zia-ul-Haq Shaheed), Pashtoonkhwa National Awami Party Pakistan, Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), National Party and the Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party won a single seat each.
Polling was postponed in the NA-8 constituency after an independent candidate was shot dead while the result of NA-88 has been withheld where re-polling is scheduled to be held on Thursday.
Political parties, including the PTI and the JUI-F, are staging protests nationwide today, Sunday, to protest against “rigging.”
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the PML-N, on Friday invited other political parties to form a coalition government with him.
