ISLAMABAD: In a significant political development, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday accepted a petition to disqualify former prime minister Imran Khan’s key loyalist in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in a land embezzlement case, just over a week after his inauguration as chief minister of the province.
Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party faced a crackdown ahead of the February 8 general elections, with many of its top leaders in jail facing various legal charges.
The party also claimed that its candidates were hindered from campaigning effectively before challenging last month’s national polls’ outcomes, alleging manipulation to benefit its adversaries and cost it numerous seats.
The PTI, however, secured a resounding victory in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa again, where Ali Amin Gandapur was sworn in as the 22nd chief minister on March 2. He led a meeting earlier this week to review the province’s financial situation and resolved to discuss outstanding payments from the central government.
“Petitioner Muhammad Kafeel has filed instant petition seeking therein disqualification of respondent namely Ali Amin Khan [Gandapur], elected Member of Provincial Assembly for PK-113, D.I. Khan III,” the ECP said in a ruling after a preliminary hearing.
It said the case against Gandapur involved the sale of 735 kanals of land of which the petitioner was the “sole and absolute owner.”
“We have heard preliminary arguments which need consideration on merit,” the ruling continued. “Office to issue notice to respondent No. 5 (Ali Amin Gandapur) for the date fixed through District Election Commissioner concerned. The service report of DEC shall reach to this office before the date fixed. Case to come up on 26.03.2024.”
