New report warns of heat danger at Paris Olympics

  • It warned that “intense heat at the Paris Olympics in July-August 2024 could lead to competitors collapsing and in worst case scenarios dying during the Games”

PARIS: A new report backed by climate scientists and athletes warned Tuesday about the dangers posed by extreme high temperatures at this year’s Paris Olympics.
The “Rings of Fire” report — a collaboration between non-profit Climate Central, academics at Britain’s University of Portsmouth and 11 Olympians — said conditions in Paris could be worse than the last Games in Tokyo in 2021.
It warned that “intense heat at the Paris Olympics in July-August 2024 could lead to competitors collapsing and in worst case scenarios dying during the Games.”
The study adds to a growing number of calls from sports people to adjust schedules and the timing of events to take into account the physical strain of competing in higher temperatures caused by global warming.
“Rings of Fire” urges organizers of competitions typically held at the height of the northern hemisphere summer — such as the Olympics or the football World Cup — to re-think their scheduling.
They should also provide improved rehydration and cooling plans for athletes and fans to avoid the risk of heat stroke, the study argued.
The Paris Olympics, which run from July 26-August 11, are set to take place in what are usually the warmest months in the French capital which has been struck by a series of record heatwaves in recent years.
More than 5,000 people died in France as a result of searing summer heat last year when new local highs above 40 degrees Centigrade (104 Fahrenheit) were recorded around the country, according to public health data.
A study in the Lancet Planet Health journal last May found that Paris had the highest heat-related death rates of 854 European towns and cities, partly due to its lack of green space and dense population.
Rather than high temperatures, incessant rain is currently the bigger weather-related concern for Paris 2024 organizers, with regular downpours in May and June leading to unusually strong currents in the river Seine and poor water quality.
The Seine is set to host a boat parade during the unprecedented opening ceremony being planned for July 26, as well as the triathlon swimming and marathon swimming events — pollution permitting.
Organizers of Paris 2024 say they have built flexibility into their schedules, enabling them to shift around some events such as the marathon or triathlon to avoid the peaks of midday heat.
But much of the Games is set to take place in temporary stands that lack shade, while the athletes’ village has been built without air conditioning to reduce the Games’ carbon footprint.
“Sleep disruption due to heat has been cited in the build-up to the 2024 Games as a major concern by athletes, especially given the lack of air conditioning in the Olympic Village,” the report said.
Olympic teams have been offered the possibility of installing portable air-conditioning units in their accommodation, however, which many have opted to include.
One of the athletes who backed the “Rings of Fire” report, Indian triathlete Pragnya Mohan, said she had left her home country because of high temperatures, with India recently reporting its longest ever heatwave.
“With climate change, the kind of heat that we experience has increased so much,” Mohan told reporters. “I am not able to train in my country. That is one of the reasons that I moved to the UK.”
Other athletes behind the report explained how athletes have adjusted their training to take into account global warming, either waking before dawn to preserve themselves or exercising in high-tech heat chambers to acclimatize to summer temperatures.
“I’ve found myself in conditions where you’re literally trying to get through the next phase of play,” Jamie Farndale, a rugby Sevens player for Britain, told reporters.
“I’ve had teamates who had heatstroke and have spent several days back in the hotel,” he added.
The last Summer Olympics in Tokyo were widely thought to have been the hottest on record, with temperatures regularly above 30C coupled with 80 percent humidity.
Tokyo organizers moved the race walk events and two marathons 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of Tokyo in the hope of cooler weather that did not really materialize.
Despite a range of anti-heat measures including misting stations, many athletes struggled while performing, including Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev who wondered aloud on court if he might die.
Speaking after Tokyo, World Athletics president Sebastian Coe, who wrote a foreword for “Rings of Fire,” warned that the “new norm” was competing in “really harsh climatic conditions.”

Serhou Guirassy scores twice in Dortmund’s 4-2 comeback win over local rival Bochum

  • The pressure on new coach Nuri Sahin seemed to be mounting when his team conceded two early goals against Bochum
  • Dortmund clawed their way back into the game

DORTMUND: Serhou Guirassy scored twice and won a penalty as Borussia Dortmund overturned a two-goal deficit to beat local rival Bochum 4-2 in the Bundesliga on Friday ahead of facing Celtic in the Champions League next week.
Dortmund had been demolished 5-1 by Stuttgart last week and the pressure on new coach Nuri Sahin seemed to be mounting when his team conceded two early goals against Bochum.
In the space of five minutes, Matus Bero scored off a smartly executed one-two through the center, then Dani de Wit made it 2-0 after teammate Myron Boadu had snatched the ball off Dortmund’s goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. On the sideline, Sahin spread his arms wide in a gesture of indignation.
Dortmund clawed their way back into the game, first with a Guirassy header just before halftime to cut the deficit to 2-1, then a penalty from Emre Can leveled the score after a clumsy foul on Guirassy.
It was Dortmund’s turn to slice through Bochum on the counter after that, Karim Adeyemi playing a perfect through-ball for Guirassy to make it 3-2 with a shot between goalkeeper Patrick Drewes’ legs. A fumble by Drewes let Felix Nmecha’s shot roll over the line for Dortmund’s fourth.
Dortmund rise to second in the table ahead of the weekend’s games, behind only Bayern Munich, and have 10 points from five games. Last season’s Champions League runner-up continue their campaign in the revamped competition at home to Scottish club Celtic on Tuesday.
Bochum are second-to-last in the 18-team Bundesliga with a solitary point under new coach Peter Zeidler.

Man City’s Rodri will miss the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery

  • The Spain international also injured his meniscus
  • “This season is over (for him),” City manager Pep Guardiola said

MANCHESTER: Manchester City midfielder Rodri will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his damaged ACL on Friday.
The Spain international also injured his meniscus.
“This season is over (for him),” City manager Pep Guardiola said. “We are there to support him in a good recovery, step by step and move forward.”
Rodri injured his right knee in the first half of City’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Sunday.
City hoped the injury would not be as bad as first feared, but confirmation of ACL damage — which can take from six months to a year to recover from — meant the four-time defending English Premier League champion will be without one of their most influential players for the remainder of this campaign.
“We don’t have a similar player, but the other players all together can replace what Rodri has given since he arrived to us,” Guardiola said. “We have to do it as a team and we have to find a way to play a lot of months without an important player for us.”

Ancelotti will likely have to replace an injured Mbappé for Real Madrid derby at Atletico

BARCELONA: Kylian Mbappé is expected to miss his first big domestic match since joining Real Madrid when the defending champion plays at Atletico Madrid without its injured striker in La Liga on Sunday.
Mbappé will be sidelined for an unspecified period after he hurt a hamstring, the club said this week. His injury came after the France star scored his seventh goal this season for Madrid in a win over Alavés.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti will have to make a choice to fill the void left by the club’s biggest blockbuster signing since Cristiano Ronaldo over a decade ago. The Italian coach could maintain his three-strong attacking line if he opts to give fellow newcomer Endrick his first start.
The explosive 18-year-old has already impressed with two goals in a handful of appearances as a late substitute that have totaled only 47 minutes. Endrick could line up alongside fellow Brazilians Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo.
The other option for Ancelotti would be to go back to the 4-4-2 setup that won the league and Champions League last year, with the exception of the now retired Toni Kroos.
That would mean adding another midfielder from among Luka Modric, Eduardo Camavinga, or Arda Guler to play alongside expected starters Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni.
“I don’t know if (Mbappé) is going to play or not, but they have several good players to turn to,” Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak said. “Whoever plays will play well and want to win as much as we do.”
Atletico was the only team to beat Madrid last season in its domestic title march. Diego Simeone’s side won its home derby 3-1 and earned a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Madrid is in second place in the league standings at four points behind Barcelona, which has a perfect 21 points after winning all seven games since Hansi Flick took over as coach.
Atletico is third, two points behind Madrid after new arrival Julián Álvarez scored a 90th-minute goal to eke out a 1-0 victory at Celta Vigo on Wednesday.
That goal could help Álvarez make the starting 11 alongside the untouchable Antoine Griezmann for the derby. Striker Alexander Sorloth is Simeone’s other top option in attack.
Álvarez and Sorloth were joined by Connor Gallagher and Robin Le Normand as part of a major summer facelift for Atletico.
Barcelona will visit Osasuna on Saturday seeking to match its club record for a perfect start to the season with an eighth consecutive win.

Brazil goalkeeper Alisson set to return from injury for Liverpool in Premier League

  • Alisson has missed big wins over Bournemouth in the league last weekend and West Ham in the League Cup on Wednesday because of a hamstring injury

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is back in training and is set to return to the team for the trip to Wolverhampton in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot gave a positive update on Friday on the Brazil international, who has missed the last two games — big wins over Bournemouth in the league and West Ham in the League Cup — because of a hamstring injury.
“We are expecting him in the whole (practice) session today,” Slot said of Alisson. “We think he is available.”
Backup keeper Caoimhin Kelleher replaced Alisson for the last two games.
Liverpool has won four of its opening five games in the league.

UEFA bans Barcelona fans from one away game in Champions League for racist conduct

  • The disciplinary sanction will apply on Nov. 6 when Barcelona plays at Red Star Belgrade
  • UEFA gave no details of the misconduct during a 2-1 loss at Monaco last week. The ticket sales ban activated a probationary sanction UEFA ordered for Barcelona last season

NYON: UEFA banned Barcelona on Friday from selling tickets to fans for its next away game in the Champions League for “racism and/or other discriminatory conduct” during a game at Monaco.
The disciplinary sanction will apply on Nov. 6 when Barcelona plays at Red Star Belgrade.
UEFA did not specify details of the misconduct during a 2-1 loss at Monaco last week in the teams’ opening game in the new format Champions League opening phase.
The ticket sales ban activated a probationary sanction UEFA ordered for Barcelona last season. In April, fans made Nazi salutes at Paris Saint-Germain in a Champions League game.
UEFA said its disciplinary judges also fined Barcelona 10,000 euros ($11,000) and ordered a new probationary sanction for a repeat offense in the next year. That will activate another ticket sales ban for one away game in a European competition.
