ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday launched several initiatives to equip the youth with modern education and skills to play an effective role in Pakistan’s development, promising his government’s all-out support to the youngsters who excelled in various fields.
The initiatives included Commonwealth Asia Youth Alliance Secretariat in Islamabad, Digital Learning Portal, AI for Youth Program, Smart Youth Smart Pakistan and the National Volunteer Corps, which aimed to make young Pakistanis capable of meeting present-day challenges.
The development came on the International Youth Day, which is observed every year on August 12 since 2000, to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding the youth.
Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad, the prime minister said the new initiatives would equip young Pakistanis with modern education and skills, and spark a “revolution” in the country.
“The country’s youth have the potential to elevate the nation to new heights, if given access to modern education and resources,” he said, promising to provide all resources to young Pakistanis.
Around 79 percent people in Pakistan, which has a population of over 241 million, are young and under the age of 40 years, according to findings of the latest census conducted in 2023.
This year, the prime minister said, the federal government would provide 1 million smartphones, tablets and laptops to top-performing students across the country, including in Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and remote areas of Balochistan, while each province would also have its separate programs to support students.
He said the government would fund the education of 1,000 Pakistani agricultural graduates in China, aiming to equip them with modern technology to boost agricultural production in Pakistan.
“Huawei has also committed to sending 200,000 youth for IT training and advanced education,” he said, adding that he would unveil a comprehensive development plan for the country on August 14.
PM Sharif also lauded Pakistani javelin hero Arshad Nadeem for winning Olympic gold for Pakistan and promised to help revive the national game of hockey.
