Neymar returns as Al-Hilal edge 9-goal Asian thriller against Al-Ain

  • Salem Al-Dawsari, Soufiane Rahimi bag hat-tricks
  • Neymar, returning from injury, almost capped his return to action with a goal

AL-AIN, UAE: Neymar finally returned to action after a year out through injury, but it was Salem Al-Dawsari who grabbed the headlines with a hat-trick as Al-Hilal won 5-4 at Al-Ain in a thrilling AFC Champions League elite clash.

The victory, against the tournament’s holders, meant that the Saudi Arabians have taken a big step toward the knockout stage, while they also enjoyed a modicum of revenge against the team from the UAE.

Three goals in the first half put the visitors from Riyadh ahead at the break to help maintain a perfect record of three wins from three in their group which, after a semifinal loss to the UAE powerhouse in last season’s edition, provided welcome news.

Al-Ain, coached by Hernan Crespo, thought they had taken the lead in the seventh minute and Al-Hilal goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Rubaie was relieved when it was ruled out for offside. The replacement for the injured Yassine Bounou misjudged a long ball out of defense and breathed a sigh of relief that the flag went up after Soufiane Rahimi — the Moroccan who wreaked havoc in the meeting between the two teams in their last meeting — put the ball in the net.

The visitors took the lead after 26 minutes thanks to a well-taken strike from Renan Lodi. The Brazilian left-back, who has enjoyed a fine start to the season, picked up possession on the corner of the area and sent a low shot into the corner.

Six minutes before the break, however, Rahimi, the tournament’s top scorer from last season, equalized for the defending champions. The Saudi Arabian visitors failed to clear a corner and the forward poked home a low cross from Brazilian midfielder Erik.

Al-Hilal then scored twice in added time. First, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic headed home a Joao Cancelo cross from the right and then, on the counter-attack, Nasser Al-Dawsari picked up the ball well inside his own half and slipped a low pass through to his namesake, who had broken free of the backline to get to the ball ahead of the goalkeeper to sweep home, first time, from the right corner of the area.

Mateo Sanabria fired home from the left side of the area after 63 minutes to make it 3-2 and get the Al-Ain fans on their feet.

But if there were nerves from the boys in blue then they were not apparent as they restored their two-goal advantage almost immediately. Malcom backheeled to Milinkovic-Savic on the right and the Serbian’s cross was swept home high into the net by Al-Dawsari for his second and Al-Hilal’s fourth.

Four-time Asian champions Al-Hilal are not the kind of team to throw away a two-goal lead with 25 minutes remaining, but Al-Ain scored again after 67 minutes. Rahimi cut inside the area from the left and his shot beat the goalkeeper at the near post to make it 4-3.

But with 15 minutes remaining, Al-Dawsari completed a fine hat-trick, shooting home powerfully from just outside the area to score a goal worthy of winning any game.

Then it was time for Neymar to come off the bench, but the impact of the superstar, injured a year earlier in action for Brazil, was limited as Al-Hilal defender Ali Al-Bulaihi was red-carded for handball on the edge of the area 10 minutes from time. From the resulting free-kick, Al-Rubaie saved well from Rahimi.

Neymar almost capped his return with a goal but his low shot from the left corner of the area just went past the opposite post. His miss could have been costly as Al-Ain scored their fourth in the 96th minute, Rahimi completing his own hat-trick from the penalty spot, but it was a little too late as Al-Hilal won a classic.

The top eight from the group of 12 progress to the second round of 16 and, on this showing, Al-Hilal are almost there.

Ronaldo and Al-Nassr’s ACL game moved amid Iran security fears

  • The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said in a statement that Esteghlal had to move its home fixture with Al-Nassr to Dubai due to security reasons
DUBAI: Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr’s AFC Champions League Elite game with Esteghlal of Tehran on Tuesday will be as closely watched in India as it is in Saudi Arabia and Iran.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said in a statement released last Tuesday that Esteghlal had to move its home fixture with Al-Nassr to the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai due to the security situation in Iran.
The decision was greeted by surprise in India as, on Oct. 7, the AFC ruled that Mohun Bagan Super Giants of Kolkata had been “considered to have withdrawn” from the second tier AFC Champions League Two for refusing to travel to Iran to play its Oct. 2 fixture against Tractor SC in the northwestern city of Tabriz.
It is not only Al-Nassr’s game that has been relocated. Tractor’s home game against Ravshan of Tajikistan, scheduled for Wednesday, has been switched to become an away tie. Iran’s national team also had to move its Oct. 15 World Cup qualifier against Qatar to Dubai.
“...(Mohun Bagan) notes that the AFC has indeed recognized the volatility of the situation in Iran and as such, has rescheduled or shifted venues for several games,” a spokesperson for Mohun Bagan told Associated Press, adding that the confederation had taken the same geopolitical instability into account that the club had. “Failing to apply the same standard to Mohun Bagan would result in unequal treatment by the AFC.”
According to the spokesperson, Mohun Bagan had made a request to the AFC that the game’s date or venue be changed before it decided not to travel.
“We consistently communicated concerns about the volatile and unsafe conditions in and around Iran, particularly regarding the safety of players and staff,” the official added.
The Indian Super League club said that it had appealed the decision to the relevant AFC committee and hoped to be reinstated into the tournament.
The AFC did not reply to an invitation to comment.
Al-Nassr has four points from the first two games and can take a big step toward the second round with a win. The revamped tournament now consists of two groups of 12 — divided into west and east geographic zones — with the top eight from each advancing to the Round of 16.
Nassr is going well in the Saudi Pro League with a 97th minute penalty from Ronaldo giving the team a 2-1 win over Al-Shabab on Friday to stay in third place.
“There are a lot of games at the moment and it is not easy,” said Stefano Pioli, Al-Nassr’s coach. “We will do our best to maintain our performances in the Asian Champions League.”
Saudi Arabia has three of the four top teams in Group A. Al-Hilal is first and the four-time winner meets defending champion Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates and could welcome Neymar back to action after a year out through injury. Jeddah club Al-Ahli also has maximum points and travels to Qatar to face Al-Rayyan.
Front runners meet in Eastern Zone
In the eastern zone the top two meet. Gwangju FC of South Korea is making its first ever appearance in Asian competition and is the only team with two wins from two. It takes on Johor Darul Ta’zim of Malaysia.
Australia’s Central Coast Mariners has lost both games so far and head to China to take on Shanghai Port, coached by former Australian international Kevin Muscat, also seeking a first win.
Last season’s defeated finalist Yokohama F. Marinos also travels to China and meets Shandong Tiashan while three-time winner Pohang Steelers of South Korea faces Thailand’s Buriram United.

Messi’s scores 10th hat trick as Argentina wins World Cup qualifier

  • Lionel Messi scored his 10th international hat trick to raise his career total to 112 goals
  • Messi added goals in the 84th and 86th minutes

BUENOS AIRES: Lionel Messi scored his 10th international hat trick to raise his career total to 112 goals and also had a pair of assists to lead Argentina over Bolivia 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
After missing a pair of October qualifiers while recovering from a right ankle injury sustained in the Copa America, Messi played the entire match before raucous fans at Estadio Monumental who chanted his name after he opened the scoring in the 19th minute.
Messi added goals in the 84th and 86th minutes. The 37-year-old is second on the career scoring list behind the 133 of Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
Rival Brazil and under-pressure coach Dorival Júnio got some relief with a convincing performance in a 4-0 home win against Peru.
Argentina leads South American qualifying with 22 points after 10 matches, three points clear of second-place Colombia, who beat Chile 4-0. Uruguay, which earlier had a goalless draw with Ecuador, and Brazil have 16 points each, with the Uruguayans in third place on goal difference.
Ecuador and Paraguay follow with 13 points apiece, with Ecuadorians fifth on goal difference.
The top six teams secure automatic berths in the 2026 World Cup. The seventh-place team, currently Bolivia, will play in an international playoff for a spot in the tournament.
Two more rounds will be played in November.
Messi in strong form on return
Messi’s first goal came after a mistake by a Bolivian defender, who missed a pass and allowed Messi to run freely and finish unchallenged in front of goalkeeper Billy Viscarra. Messi assisted on Lautaro Martínez’s 43rd-minute goal and gave a decisive pass once again Julián Álvarez scored in the third minute of first-half stoppage time.
Thiago Almada in the 69th minute off a low cross by Nahuel Molina before Messi had great finishing touches from the edge of the area.
“We enjoyed this, we are happy to be here playing in Argentina,” said Messi, who once again refused to say whether he will play in the next World Cup in 2026. “This could be one of the last (matches in front of the Argentinian crowd).”
Bolivia, which is seeking to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 30 years, remains in contention with 12 points.
Brazil reappears under Júnior
This month’s rounds of South American qualifying were important for coach Dorival Júnior. His team was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the latest Copa America and was struggling against rivals it used to beat easily, such as Paraguay and Venezuela.
Júnior’s chances of success seemed low in matches against Chile and Peru due to injuries affecting several of his starters; goalkeeper Alisson, defender Éder Militão and striker Vinicius Júnior were all out. But a last-minute win against the Chileans and a convincing display against the Peruvians will give the Brazil coach some relief.
Raphinha scored from the spot twice to put Brazil in front in Brasilia, the first in the 38th minute and the second in the 54th.
Substitute Andreas Pereira made more than 60,000 fans at the National Stadium gasp when he scored with a volley in the 71st minute. Another substitute, Luiz Henrique, scored for the second consecutive match for the national team with a classy shot from the edge of the box.
“These were two matches that we controlled well,” Raphinha said. “We are far from perfection, but we are on the right track.”
Chile in last place
Chile’s loss to Colombia has placed the job of coach Ricardo Gareca at risk. Davinson Sánchez, Luis Díaz, Jhon Durán and Luis Sinistierra scored the goals for Colombia. Chile is in last place in the qualifying group with only five points.
Paraguay beat Venezuela 2-1 and moved into a qualifying position in the standings. Jon Aramburo opened the scoring for the visitors in the 25th minute, but striker Antonio Sarabia came off the bench to win it for the hosts with goals in the 59th and 74th minutes.

Dodgers stay alive all the way to the World Series with bullpen games and contributions from all

  • A raucous clubhouse celebration was in order after the Dodgers beat the New York Mets
  • Next up are the New York Yankees in the World Series, starting with Game 1 on Friday at Dodger Stadium

LOS ANGELES: The World Series is always the goal for the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers. It’s been elusive recently, with first-round flops two years running. Now, with Shohei Ohtani leading the way for the first time, they are going for another championship.

So a raucous clubhouse celebration was in order after the Dodgers beat the New York Mets to clinch their record 25th National League pennant.

“We hope we can do it again,” infielder Max Muncy said. “We need to get four more wins.”

Next up are the New York Yankees in the World Series, starting with Game 1 on Friday at Dodger Stadium. The best-of-seven series pits two of baseball’s most glamorous teams, with a storied World Series rivalry.

“I know the fans love this and the players love this, too,” Los Angeles outfielder Teoscar Hernández said. “It’s not going to be easy but we have the team, we have the help, and we’re going to go for that World Series trophy.”

The Yankees have beaten the Dodgers in eight of their 11 World Series clashes. The first seven were played in New York — with the Yankees in the Bronx and Dem Bums in Brooklyn. The Dodgers moved to Los Angeles before the 1958 season.

“I think the whole world was looking forward or hoping for this potential matchup,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

He isn’t kidding. The Dodgers have another country backing them — Japan has been tuning into the team’s playoff games in record numbers, eager to see Ohtani and pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

The Dodgers landed Ohtani with a record $700 million, 10-year deal in free agency, and they gave Yamamoto a $325 million, 12-year contract.

Ohtani’s performance in 2024 included becoming the first player in major league history with 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season.

At the same time, the Dodgers overcame a litany of injuries that decimated their starting pitching. They led the major leagues with 36 injured list placements and 2,342 days lost, 445 more days than any other team.

Helped by a couple key contributors that arrived at the July trade deadline, they still finished with baseball’s best record at 98-64 to earn home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

“This is a team that stayed together. Everybody contributed,” Hernández said. “Shohei was a big part of all the wins we got, but the pitching, the bullpen was the big thing and thanks to them we’re here, going to the World Series.”

The Dodgers were in a perilous position in their NL Division Series, trailing the rival San Diego Padres. They rallied to win the last two games and take the best-of-five series 3-2.

“They proved to themselves how tough they are,” Roberts said.

The Dodgers are down to three healthy starters and have used three bullpen games so far this postseason. That strategy worked twice, including Sunday’s clincher over the Mets.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. They acquired Tyler Glasnow, but he went down with an elbow injury in mid-August. Two weeks later, Clayton Kershaw, already coming off elbow surgery, was finished because of a bone spur in his big toe. Dustin May never pitched this season and Tony Gonsolin was rehabbing after Tommy John surgery.

Walker Buehler struggled at times in his first season back from a second Tommy John procedure.

All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman and shortstop Miguel Rojas have missed some time this postseason because of injuries, forcing multiple lineup changes.

Still, the Dodgers have stayed alive.

“I’m going to enjoy it no matter how little I helped,” said Kershaw, the team’s longest-tenured current player.

The Dodgers bolstered their roster in July by trading for starter Jack Flaherty, reliever Michael Kopech and versatile utilityman Tommy Edman, whose 11 RBIs against the Mets earned him NLCS MVP honors. Thrown into the cleanup spot in Game 6, Edman responded with four RBIs.

“I just think that I’ve got to bet on players that I feel are capable, put them in the best position to have success and be willing to live with whatever consequence,” Roberts said. “This postseason, I’ve had a lot of clarity, and the players have made me look really good.”

NBA champion Celtics prepare for banner night and opener against rival New York Knicks

  • The league’s most decorated franchise will raise its 18th banner to the TD Garden rafters
  • Led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, they are bringing back their entire starting lineup

BOSTON: The Boston Celtics are giving themselves one more chance to celebrate their latest NBA championship before they turn their attention to a repeat.

The league’s most decorated franchise will raise its 18th banner to the TD Garden rafters Tuesday night before the season opener against the New York Knicks. Players will also receive their championship rings in the pregame ceremony.

“This is a great accomplishment, that we get to do this. Be one hell of a night,” guard Payton Pritchard said after practice Monday. “But then again, we talked about we’ve got to do it again. We’ve got to reset that focus.

“We get the rings, and then we want to go out and prove that we’re ready to make another statement.”

The Celtics cruised through the NBA regular season last year — finishing with the best record in the Eastern Conference by 14 games — and then went 16-3 in the playoffs. Led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, they are bringing back their entire starting lineup and most of their bench, and are the favorites to win it all again.

Coach Joe Mazzulla has said he doesn’t feel any pressure to repeat.

“We’re all going to be dead soon, and it really doesn’t matter anymore. So there’s zero pressure,” he said. “You have an opportunity to carry the organization forward, to double down on the tradition and history of what this organization has. And what else would you expect than someone expecting you to win all the time?

“It’s not pressure,” he told reporters at the team’s practice facility. “There’s nothing anyone in this circle can do to me that’s gonna impact my identity and who I am as a person or a coach. We’re either gonna win or we’re not, and 40 years from now, none of you are invited to my funeral and that’s it.”

The Celtics won 16 NBA titles from 1957-86, with Bill Russell claiming 11 in 13 years. The 1970s teams of Dave Cowens and John Havlicek won a pair, and the Big Three of Larry Bird, Robert Parish and Kevin McHale won three more in the 1980s.

When Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen won it all in 2008, they ended the franchise’s longest-ever title drought. They made it back to the NBA Finals two years later, but lost to the Lakers. (The period from 2008-24 was the second-longest drought.)

Pritchard said that to be considered among the Celtics greats they will need to win another.

“A lot of people can do it once,” Pritchard said. “I know a championship’s hard, but there’s a lot of people who have won one. But winning it multiple times, creating almost like a dynasty, that’s hard to do. So that’s greatness, and that’s something we’re trying to achieve.”

The quest begins against the Knicks, who have positioned themselves as Boston’s top competition in the East after acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges over the summer.

Mazzulla said he thinks his team will be ready.

“I trust who they are. I think they have an understanding of both ‘This is what we accomplished’ and ‘This is what we’re trying to do’” the coach said. “All the intangibles that go into winning should carry over from one season to another season.”

“You have to appreciate it,” he said. “But you’ve got to know what got you there and if you forget what got you there, you’ll never get back.”

Spanish and German soccer royalty collide in third round of Champions League games

  • All four teams have been European champions inside the last 30 years and they’ve made mixed starts to this season’s revamped format
  • Just like last season when reaching the Champions League final against the odds before losing to Madrid, Dortmund have been far more impressive in Europe than in the Bundesliga
  • If Manchester City beat Sparta Prague at home on Wednesday, the English champions will set the record for consecutive games undefeated in the history of the competition

LONDON: It’s the best in Spain against German soccer royalty in the latest round of games in the Champions League.

A rematch of last season’s final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund is the headliner on Tuesday, before Barcelona host Bayern Munich on Wednesday in the next chapter of what has been a fairly one-sided rivalry in Europe’s top club competition.

All four teams have been European champions inside the last 30 years and they’ve made mixed starts to this season’s revamped format.

Dortmund have won both of their opening matches — 3-0 at Club Brugge and 7-1 at home to Celtic — to be the early leader and top scorer of the league stage, which sees all 36 teams play eight matches: four at home and four away.

Just like last season when reaching the Champions League final against the odds before losing to Madrid, Dortmund have been far more impressive in Europe than in the Bundesliga. Indeed, after thrashing Celtic, Dortmund lost at Union Berlin four days later.

Madrid, meanwhile, is coming off a surprising 1-0 loss at Lille, the defending champions’ first defeat in the competition since the semifinals in the 2022-23 season.

In fact, the second round of matches threw up a few shockers, including Bayern losing 1-0 at Aston Villa to end their unbeaten run under new coach Vincent Kompany.

Now Bayern head to Barcelona in search of a seventh straight win in their head-to-head, a streak that includes a humiliating 8-2 loss for Barca in the quarterfinals in 2020. Hansi Flick was in charge of Bayern that night and is now the coach of Barcelona.

Man City record

If Manchester City beat Sparta Prague at home on Wednesday, the English champions will set the record for consecutive games undefeated in the history of the competition — even stretching back before 1992 into the European Cup era.

City are currently on 25 matches unbeaten, tied with Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United team from 2007-09.

The last loss for Pep Guardiola’s team in the Champions League was the 3-1 defeat against Real Madrid in the second leg of the semifinals in 2022, which cost City a place in the final that season.

Since then, City have won 17 matches and drawn eight, having won the competition in 2022-2023 and been eliminated on penalties by Madrid in 2023-24 after back-to-back draws in the quarterfinals.

Unlikely high-flyer

Of the seven teams on a maximum six points, Brest is undoubtedly the most surprising.

This is the unheralded French team’s European debut — in any competition — after an unexpected third-place finish in Ligue 1 last season. It couldn’t be going any better.

A 2-1 win over Austrian champion Sturm Graz was followed by a 4-0 thrashing of another Austrian team, Salzburg, in the second round of games.

They will be the easiest opponents Brest are going to face. Now the hard work begins, with German champion Bayer Leverkusen next up on Wednesday.

Leverkusen won’t be heading to Brest, a pretty port city in Brittany, but Guingamp — about 114 kilometers (71 miles) away. That’s because Brest’s stadium doesn’t meet UEFA standards so its home games have been relocated.

Bad starts

With each team playing eight games in the new league system, opening with back-to-back losses isn’t the nightmare start it would have been in the old format when there were six matches per side in the group stage.

Still, AC Milan, Leipzig, Girona, Salzburg, Sturm Graz, Slovan Bratislava, Young Boys and Red Star Belgrade will be desperate to get at least one point on the board in the third round of fixtures.

Salzburg and Young Boys haven’t even scored a goal.

One of the eight pointless teams is sure to get off the mark, with tournament newcomer Girona hosting Slovan Bratislava on Tuesday.

Leipzig could easily be on zero points after three games, though, with Liverpool visiting on Wednesday — a match that has more intrigue since former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was signed as the head of global soccer at Red Bull, whose international network of clubs includes Leipzig.
