Approach the site www.icasualties.org with a deep breath and plenty of dread. The site gives an in-depth look at fatalities during the war on Iraq. The majority of the information at the site concerns coalition war dead, but attention is also paid to the contractors, journalists and Iraqis killed in this tragedy.
The site was developed to provide information that has been culled from government sources and scrupulously cross-checked against other existing lists to ensure the most accurate and complete accounting of deaths is assembled. Then the site takes those numbers further. The iCasualties team presents the data in a way that allows other researchers and interested individuals to easily analyze it for trends and benchmarks.
The raw coalition death numbers are given on a daily basis in the Summary chart on the main page and are tabulated for three periods: (1) March 20, 2003 through May 1, 2003 (the end of major combat), (2) May 2, 2003 through June 28, 2004 (the day of the official turnover of sovereignty to Iraq), and (3) June 29, 2004 (the day after the official turnover of sovereignty to Iraq) through the current date.
Clicking on “View Details” will bring up the actual data table with each soldier’s name and basic information. The table can be filtered by date of death or the age or rank of the soldier or by whether the soldier was with US or UK forces. The site also provides a less comprehensive listing of coalition military fatalities by year and country in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
