JEDDAH, 13 June 2006 — Young beggars don’t seem to care about the professional ethics of seeking alms and have scant respect for their fellow professionals. Recently, an old beggar who regularly exhorts charity in front of a mosque in Madinah was left wondering what the world was coming to after having been beaten unconscious by another beggar. The man had left his seat outside the mosque for a few moments to explain to worshippers that he urgently needed money to operate on a tumor. After delivering a passionate speech inside the mosque he quickly hobbled outside to his strategic post to find a huge disabled beggar occupying his seat. Frustrated and angry he protested by kicking the beggar in the chest. The other man equally vexed mustered his energy to punch the old man in the face knocking him unconscious. The old man later awoke to find his face bloody and himself in jail, Al-Watan daily reported yesterday.
