YANBU, 4 July 2006 — A conscientious young lady here refused to give her hand in marriage to a young suitor, who had a reputation for being a fast and furious driver, saying she would never marry somebody who drives dangerously, the daily Al-Madinah reported. The lady’s father stood by her decision to turn down the lovelorn speed freak, who said he agreed with the idea that his daughter shouldn’t marry somebody who might die, or worse, take her life with careless, risky driving habits. Perhaps if more young ladies expressed this sentiment, there would be fewer crazy drivers on Saudi roads? According to official statistics, more than 5,000 people die in road accidents in the Kingdom every year. The actual number of deaths is higher because the published figures only represent deaths at scenes of accidents and do not include those who succumb to injuries later.
