"This will benefit students who did not come under the purview of a recent royal decree for an increase of 15 percent in allowance (to state employees)," said Councilor Ahmad Al-Zilai, who sponsored the recommendation.
The Shoura Council recommendation must be approved by the Council of Ministers and then ratified by royal decree before it can be implemented.
King Abdulaziz University Dean of Student Affairs Abdullah Mahraji said nearly 20 percent of university students are in need of another source of income in order to meet their financial requirements as many of them have to support their families.
"Some of the students are married and, of course, they must have the means to support their families," he said.
Currently students receive a monthly allowance that varies with majors.
For example, students of arts and humanities receive SR850 a month while science and engineering majors take in SR990. Some students must allocate part of this money for study materials.
