ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said on Wednesday that the government was striving to revive Pakistan’s economy and the $20 billion Saudi investment in the country was also a step in the same direction.
Addressing the Business Leaders Conference in Islamabad, he said: “One of the government’s top priorities is the revival national economy. We want the people of Pakistan to live and prosper in their own country and feel proud of their national identity.”
Qureshi added that the government was fully aware of the economic challenges facing Pakistan and was doing its best to create investment opportunities in the country.
“Our efforts have already started paying dividends,” he said.
The foreign minister pointed out that Pakistan had a strategic location, adding that the administration in Islamabad wanted to capitalize on that and increase the country’s trade with other states and regions through economic diplomacy.
“Pakistan is not a poor country,” he noted. “Yet it had to go to the [International Monetary Fund] time and again due to its administrative weaknesses. We have got plenty of resources, though we have reached the current state due to rampant corruption [in the country].”
Qureshi also told the participants of the conference that Pakistan was introducing a new visa regime to promote tourism. “This will help improve the country’s image since the government has decided to extend the new policy to 125 different countries,” he continued.
