KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi announced on Sunday that the remaining Pakistan Super League (PSL) 8 matches would be held in Lahore and Rawalpindi as per schedule, as the cricket board made headway in its talk with the interim Punjab government on a financial dispute.
Media reports stated that the remaining matches of this year’s PSL, scheduled to be held in Lahore and Rawalpindi, would be shifted back to Karachi after the interim Punjab government reportedly demanded Rs450 million from the board for security arrangements. That amount also includes the costs the government has already incurred for hosting matches in Multan.
The PCB had an agreement to pay only Rs50 million with the previous government of Punjab, which was dissolved in the last week of January and the board has already paid that amount as agreed.
Rawalpindi, with 11 games, has the hosting rights of most PSL 8 matches this season while Lahore was to host the playoffs and the final of the tournament at the city’s Qaddafi Stadium. The Multan and Karachi leg of the tournament has concluded.
Local media reports said Sethi, chair of the PCB’s Managing Committee, reached out to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to resolve the dispute on Sunday. Sharif, according to Geo Super, assured Sethi of his “full support.”
“Good news: CM Punjab Mohsin Naqvi Saheb has been kind enough to agree to share cost of lighting routes during PSL matches in Lahore,” Sethi wrote on Twitter.
“HBL PSL8 matches in Lahore and Pindi shall continue as scheduled,” he added.
The PSL is arguably Pakistan’s biggest and most lucrative sports event. Ever since its launch in 2016, the cricket league has managed to attract top-notch brands and has managed to establish itself as one of the top cricket leagues around the world.
The PSL has also helped launch many of Pakistan’s T20 cricket stars such as Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Asif Ali, Haris Rauf, and others.
