EA Sports FC kicks off new title extravaganza with Saudi Pro League in the game

  • The highly-anticipated game launches on all platforms on Sept. 29, 2023
  • Ronaldinho, Luis Figo and Erling Haaland were on hand to showcase EA Sports’ new football title

After months of speculation, drip-fed information, and a very public split from the world football governing body, FIFA, EA Sports has revealed its new title contender. EA Sports FC made its debut on July 13 live from an undisclosed location in Amsterdam — with the full launch on all platforms expected on Sept. 29.

Typical for EA Sports announcements, this was a bombastic affair that played out in front of the assembled global press and content creators, and streamed to millions of fans worldwide.

It included a procession of football icons: Ronaldinho, Didier Drogba, Luis Figo, and decorated England Lionesses defender Alex Scott all appeared and waved to the crowd. By the time treble-winning goal-machine Erling Haaland walked to the stage like a WWE superstar in green silk pajamas, it was clear that this was less to do with the action on the pitch and more a show of strength off it. More on this later.

In terms of the game, FC24 — as it is now abbreviated — will be very familiar to the FIFA crowd. Like that comfy pair of old five-a-side boots, it comes with the tried, tested, and incredibly popular Ultimate Team mode. This season’s twist will include professional players from the women’s game playing alongside the gents.

HyperMotionV — the tech that dictates the ebb and flow of the in-game action — will now use more than 180 real-life professional games to, as EA Sports says, “translate the rhythm and fluidity” into FC24.

This means the action will be closer to what you see in the stadiums or on TV than ever before, to capture the drama of the world’s most popular sport.

The evolution of the graphics and animations continues with the upgraded Frostbite Engine. Players will mimic their real-life counterparts’ movements more accurately, while the kits will have their own physics that will move realistically depending on each player’s stride and playing style.

Speaking of which, PlayStyles is an innovation for FC24. Built on the Opta stats database that crunches the numbers on everything a footballer does in a game, PlayStyles will “go beyond the overall rating” to make players feel and play like their real-life counterparts. This was the most interesting part of the showcase — Haaland’s PJs being a close second — and something that has plagued EA Sports’ FIFA for decades. All the players previously felt alike, with the only real difference coming in the speed attributes of each one.

Now, Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. will have a devastatingly flamboyant approach to the game full of slick tricks and feints, while Liverpool stopper Virgil van Dijk will be strong and have a more noticeable physical presence. Both signature styles will help players stand out on the pitch and contribute to the overall team.

It is early days, but it has the potential to allow less exciting players such as Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes to flourish with their movement and passing, rather than just being quick or able to score at will.

We also know that the Roshn Saudi League — Saudi Pro League — will return to EA Sports FC. With superstars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic now plying their trade in the league, it is going to offer a great alternative to the more illustrious competitions this year.

Regarding gameplay tweaks, this is all that EA Sports divulged to fans at its star-studded event. There was a “gameplay” trailer, which fans were quick to point out contained around one second of actual footage. As mentioned earlier, this EA Sports event was light on tangible information and felt more like a climax to a marketing campaign — an act that would reestablish it as the football game of choice, which is odd considering it is currently a one-horse race.

There is no doubt EA Sports FC will follow in the illustrious stud marks of the popular FIFA series. It is guaranteed to sell millions of copies as it always has because it is the same developers making the same all-conquering game under a different name.

However, the cynical view is that the showcase was geared toward reminding its old partner, FIFA, where the power lies. In the runup to the event, EA Sports called on the stars of the game to post their excitement about EA Sports FC on social media. The military-like precision of the social media strategy that followed the initial announcement saw David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Mo Salah and others post about their excitement regarding FC24. This was a direct flexing of marketing might and a reminder of how ingrained EA is within the world of football.

Announcing partnerships with the Bundesliga, Serie A, and the English Premier League is a hat trick that will be hard to follow. And bagging UEFA’s exclusive Champions League license is a devastating blow akin to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Bayern Munich-busting injury time goal in the 1999 final. Make no mistake, EA Sports is pulling no punches in its pursuit of dominance.

At this stage, it is business as usual at EA Sports, with or without world football’s governing body. This is a continuation of the success it has already enjoyed in the football video game space, and it is not showing signs of slowing down. Over to you, FIFA.

Arsenal moves up to second in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Ipswich

LONDON: Arsenal moved up to second place in the Premier League with a 1-0 home win against Ipswich on Friday.
Mikel Arteta’s side is six points behind leader Liverpool, which has a game in hand.
Second-bottom Ipswich had won two of its last three away games but was up against it from the start at the Emirates.
The visitors did not have one touch in the Gunners’ box during the first 45 minutes and, although Ipswich showed signs of life after the break, it was Arsenal which continued to dominate the game, marshaled by Declan Rice in midfield.
Kai Havertz got the only goal midway through the first half when he knocked in a cross from Leandro Trossard.
Havertz, Rice, Mikel Merino, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus all had chances but none of them could add to Arsenal’s tally.
“It’s so tough, every team is tough to break down,” Havertz said. “They fight for each other and at the end we’re very proud for the win.”
Arsenal is a point above third-place Chelsea and two points clear of season surprise team Nottingham Forest in fourth.
Seagulls and Bees share the points on south coast
Brighton had most of the chances but could not find the net in a 0-0 draw with Brentford that extended the south coast club’s winless run to six league games.
It was a frustrating night for the home side and especially Julio Enciso. The Paraguay striker had a host of opportunities to score but couldn’t make them count.
Along with Southampton, Brentford has the worst away record in the league with seven losses and two draws and it was easy to see why in this toothless performance.
Brentford had an early goal from Yoane Wissa ruled out for offside and, although it came a bit more into the game in the second half, it failed to pressure Icelandic goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson, who made his Premier League debut eight minutes before halftime when Mark Flekken went off with a thigh injury.
One bright spot for the home side was the return of winger Solly March. He came on as a late substitute to make his first appearance for Brighton since injuring a knee against Manchester City 14 months ago.
The result leaves Brighton in 10th place with 26 points, one spot and two points ahead of the Bees.

Ex-Turkiye boss Terim named Al-Shabab coach

  • Terim won the 2000 UEFA Cup with Galatasary

RIYADH: Former Turkiye and Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim was appointed Al-Shabab boss on Friday.
Terim, who won the 2000 UEFA Cup with the Turkish outfit, replaces Victor Pereira in charge of the sixth place team in the Saudi Pro League.
The 71-year-old’s last job was with Greece’s Panathinaikos, but he left at the end of last season.

In Saudi Arabia, Terim will overlook a squad including Belgium winger Yannick Carrasco and Italy midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura.
Terim is set to work under Al-Shabab’s director of football, former Juventus and Czech Republic midfielder Pavel Nedved.
“Having been a player with Juventus for years, he’s also done a lot as a director of football,” Terim told reporters at Istanbul airport before flying to start his new job.
“I’m very happy to be with him, I think he was a great footballer, a great name and an important symbol,” the former AC Milan and Fiorentina boss added.

Hosts Kuwait held by Qatar, Oman and UAE play out draw in Arabian Gulf Cup

  • 101st-minute equalizer rescued point for Qatar
  • Oman progress, UAE crash out

LONDON: Group A of the Arabian Gulf Cup came to its conclusion on Friday, with hosts Kuwait and Oman both securing the points they needed to progress to the semifinals.

Kuwait thought they had beaten their Gulf rivals with a goal from Mohammad Daham in the 74th minute of the match at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium in Kuwait City.

But a 101st-minute equalizer from Mohammed Muntari deep into stoppage time rescued some pride for the Qataris, who crashed out of the tournament by failing to win.

In the day’s other match, Oman faced the UAE in another crucial encounter.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, which secured Oman’s advancement to the next stage and brought the UAE’s campaign to an end.

Al-Ahli Dubai midfielder Yahya Al-Ghassani had given the Emiratis a half-time lead, but they were pegged back by an Abdulrahman Al-Mushaifri equalizer 11 minutes from the end.

The group stages of the Arabian Gulf Cup conclude on Saturday with the final matches in Group B.

Saudi Arabia need a victory against Iraq to guarantee a semifinal spot, while already-qualified Bahrain will look to make it three wins from three when they play Yemen.

Argentine FA opens new Middle East office in Dubai

  • Body will now boast permanent base in region, office planned for Saudi Arabia

DUBAI: The Argentine Football Association has expanded its presence in the Middle East with the opening of a new office located in the UAE, and the current world champions are also expected to soon boast a similar presence in Saudi Arabia.

Leandro Petersen, the association’s chief commercial and marketing officer, and Pablo Diaz, head of its international relations, were in attendance at the office’s opening in Dubai.

Located at prime locations, the new offices will enable the Argentine FA to build strategic partnerships and elevate its profile both locally and regionally.

Petersen said: “The opening of a Middle East office is a huge moment for us as we look to establish a permanent presence in the region, giving us a platform to strengthen ties and enhance our current offerings.

“Naturally, having become world champions in Qatar, the Middle East is a region which means so much to not only the Argentinian Football Association, but the entire country, and we are delighted to have a base from where we can build important long-term relationships with both fans and businesses.

“This region is undoubtedly now one of the key global markets, and for us to be positioned in Dubai will open up many opportunities as we expand our presence on a global level.”

It was announced earlier this year that the Argentine FA had partnered with DUNE | 23, a leading UAE-based marketing and communications agency focused on the sport and entertainment sector.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Friday at the new DUNE | 23 offices in Dubai. The event was attended by managing partners Lloyd McMillan and Jamie Hosie, who joined Argentine FA representatives to mark the occasion.

Hosie said: “We are proud to partner with the Argentinian Football Association to strengthen its presence across the region.

“Together, we aim to create dynamic events, produce engaging digital content, and unlock new commercial opportunities to ensure the Argentinian FA remains at the forefront of football in the Middle East.”

Howe hopes Newcastle have ‘moved on’ in last two seasons

  • Newcastle reached the Champions League for the first time in 20 years when they qualified for last season’s competition
  • Newcastle slipped to 12th place after a 4-2 defeat at Brentford on December 7, but have since rallied

LONDON: Eddie Howe hopes his current Newcastle team have “moved on” from the one which finished fourth in the Premier League two seasons ago.
The Magpies continued an impressive run of results on Thursday by beating 10-man Aston Villa 3-0 at St. James’ Park — their fourth straight win in all competitions.
Newcastle climbed to fifth in the table and within six points of second-placed Chelsea.
Newcastle reached the Champions League for the first time in 20 years when they qualified for last season’s competition.
“I’d hope we’ve moved on from that team,” Howe said.
“You can never go back in time and replicate what that team was. That team was an outstanding side...
“But you can never go back. It’s all about the future. We’ve signed some new players, the dynamic is slightly different and for me, the evolution of the team always had to be that we wanted to be better with the ball, we wanted to control the game more with the ball.”
Newcastle went ahead in just the second minute through Anthony Gordon’s strike before Villa striker Jhon Duran was controversially sent off.
Further goals from Alexander Isak — his 10th in as many league games — and Joelinton secured all three points.
Newcastle slipped to 12th place after a 4-2 defeat at Brentford on December 7, but have since rallied.
“We’re shooting for whatever we can shoot for,” Howe said when asked about Newcastle’s top-four hopes.
“We’ll take small steps, we’ll go game-by-game, but I’m really heartened by how the team is playing.”
